Clean Air Act threatened?

Coal lobbyists are pressuring the Senate to roll back the Clean Air Act as part of the energy bill. Can you ask Sen. Schumer if he is for or against rolling back the Clean Air Act?

Dear MoveOn member,

Lobbyists for Big Coal won a victory in the House energy bill—the repeal of a key Clean Air Act provision. This would lock in a new generation of dirty coal power and block many of the solar and wind power jobs we need.1 Will the Senate do the same or will they protect this vital law?

Senator Charles Schumer has not yet taken a public position on the Clean Air Act rollback. Today, we're going to ask him to take a stand.

Can you call Sen. Schumer to ask if he is for or against weakening the Clean Air Act?

You'd think the answer to this question would be obvious, but it's not. A majority of House members—including more than 200 Democrats—voted for a bill that does some good things, like improving energy efficiency, but also repeals a whole section of the Clean Air Act that requires limits on global warming pollution from coal plants. And unless senators step up now to prevent it, that could easily happen again in the Senate.

Will the Senate save the Clean Air Act, allowing Obama to crack down on dirty coal plants? Or will Big Coal get a free pass—while also crowding out many solar and wind start-ups and the new jobs they'd create?2 Sen. Schumer will help decide.

MoveOn members have been asking senators this question again and again. Together, we ran a newspaper ad in a Capitol Hill newspaper. We sent 66,000 faxes. We sent messages to our senators on Facebook and Twitter.

Now it's time to make some calls.

Please ask Sen. Schumer to save the Clean Air Act:
