The greatest casualty is being forgotten

Dear MoveOn members,

After almost nine years, the loss of more than 4,400 of my fellow American soldiers and countless Iraqi civilian lives, and at a cost of $800 billion that was badly needed at home, the War in Iraq is over.

Finally, the troops have come home, where they belong.

As an Army Reservist, I'm part of a brother and sisterhood. We look out for each other during good times and bad. The mission has been accomplished, not because we're leaving Iraq, but because our troops committed themselves to their country and have served the people of the United States to the best of their abilities.

Right or wrong, our nation sent these troops to war. Our military men and women have done their duty and for that they deserve our thanks. Now, my fellow veterans need our support.

The Wounded Warrior Project is dedicated to helping the thousands of wounded warriors returning home from the current conflicts and their families. Will you chip in whatever you can afford during this season of giving as a tax-deductible contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project?

The tag line of the Wounded Warriors is, "The greatest casualty is being forgotten." Now that the war is receding from the headlines and soldiers are reentering civilian life, it's critical that this generation of troops is supported.

Veterans, suffering from wounds both seen and unseen, have returned to high unemployment. Thousands are homeless or about to lose their homes. They need treatment for their injuries and support transitioning to civilian life. In short, my fellow veterans need our help.

One of the most important principles of the Wounded Warriors is their emphasis on helping injured servicemembers aid and assist each other. That's how we ensure that we will have the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded servicemembers in our nation's history.

No matter whether you opposed the war or supported it, will you help support our veterans by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project?

Thank you for helping our wounded warriors.

–Tiffany

Fwd: Disappearing MoveOn?

Hi—I wanted to make sure you saw this email in the midst of holiday craziness. We could really use your help!

Dear MoveOn member,

Between work or school, and paying the bills, and taking out the trash, and checking out that new XBox/trashy novel/cookbook/fingerpainting set, you probably don't think about MoveOn too much.

When you do, you probably think we send you too much email. Almost everyone thinks we do (except my mother-in-law, God bless her).

But you're probably also glad for the work that gets done thanks to all those emails. Glad that whenever the Republicans come after working Americans, MoveOn members are there fighting back. That whenever a proud progressive like Elizabeth Warren comes under attack, we stick up for them. That every day, MoveOn is a channel for millions of people to speak truth to the powerful—Republican OR Democrat.

Twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year, we're a rapid response progressive political alarm system. Sure, sometimes you just click delete. But imagine if MoveOn disappeared and the work so many people do through MoveOn stopped happening altogether.

Not to get technical, but it would be bad.

To avoid that—to keep MoveOn going and growing—costs money, even though we keep our staff small and work from home to keep overhead low. Right now, to make ends meet, we need to raise $400,000 by the end of the year.

That's not a lot—in fact if every MoveOn member gave just 5 cents, we'd be all set. If every MoveOn member gave a few dollars, it would cover our budget for years.

Sadly though, not everyone can. Too many MoveOn members are unemployed, or have seen their hours or benefits cut, or are having health problems—and really truly can't afford anything.

So if you're blessed enough this holiday season to have a few bucks in your pocket, please chip in to keep MoveOn fighting hard for the issues we all care about. And if you can afford it, kick in a couple extra to cover some folks who are hurting.

At the end of the day, MoveOn is its members—we're a platform for millions of people from all walks of life who take time out of busy lives to fight for what's right. Please donate $5 so we can keep being there for every important fight in 2012.

Thanks for all you do,

–Justin and the rest of the team

UPDATE: We are winning on Internet censorship

Dear MoveOn member,

I just had a meeting with Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, our champion fighting against Internet censorship. He asked me to thank you for all the hard work you've done to help stop Internet censorship.

We can be thankful this holiday season that the Internet as we know it is safe. We stopped lobbyists from big record and movie companies and the Chamber of Commerce from giving themselves the ability to demand that the government shut down websites they're uncomfortable with without due process.

But this fight is not over. The big corporations that want this legislation rammed through are still going to push hard for it in early 2012.

MoveOn members, along with other progressive organizations, entrepreneurs, tech companies, and free speech advocates, created tremendous public pressure to block this legislation. The House version of the Internet Censorship Act stalled during its House Judiciary Committee hearing last week.1 The Senate version has been punted to next year, and Sen. Wyden has reaffirmed his promise to filibuster the legislation.2

We've got to stay committed to protecting the Internet. In early January we'll need to go to bat for this again to stop Internet censorship with more action and energy.

In the meantime, enjoy the Internet, and thanks for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,

As soon as this week, Congress will start debating whether to give the government the power to turn off parts of the Internet. If that sounds like a terrible recipe for abuse of power, that's because it is.

If enacted, a new law would make it so a simple allegation of copyright infringement—with no review process—could lead to the shutdown of sites from YouTube to Wikipedia to MoveOn.org.1 Any website, foreign or U.S.-based, could be wiped out on suspicion and made unavailable to everyone in the world.

For example, if you (or Justin Bieber) wanted to post a video to YouTube of yourself singing a Beatles song, a record company could force the Department of Justice to shut down YouTube. Really.2

But as you may have guessed, Congress didn't come up with this tragically terrible idea on their own. Lobbyists representing Comcast, Pfizer, record and movie companies, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce3 have been pushing Democrats and Republicans to pass bills to allow this new kind of Internet censorship. And they're close to getting their way.

But a small number of Democrats are standing strong and saying "No" to these powerful special interest groups. They need our help.

Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon is one of our champions. He has promised to start a historic filibuster of the Internet Censorship Act where he'll read the names of every person that signs a petition against Internet censorship.4 It's the perfect opportunity for 5 million Internet-connected progressives to visibly add their voice to a Senate debate. The more of us that sign, the stronger this effort to block this terrible law will be.

Click here to add your name and say NO to Internet Censorship.

We know that the Internet's openness, freedom, and lack of censorship are what make it a bastion of infinite possibility, continued innovation, and job creation. Innovative companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Mozilla, and Yahoo have spoken out against this law, saying:

We should not jeopardize a foundational structure that has worked for content owners and Internet companies alike and provides certainty to innovators with new ideas for how people create, find, discuss, and share information lawfully online.5

Internet venture capitalists say that the legislation is "ripe for abuse,"6 and leading law professors reject it because it will "allow the government to block Internet access to websites."7

We condemn censorship overseas when it happens in China or Iran. But today, we need to stand up for freedom of speech on the Internet here at home.

Click here to add your name and say NO to Internet Censorship.

Thanks for all you do.

RE: The end of the Internet?

Dear MoveOn member,

Today the House version of the Internet Censorship Act is being marked up in the House Judiciary Committee.

The pressure we've put on Congress to say NO to Internet censorship is working. The House is now considering lots of amendments to improve the legislation. Thanks to our efforts and the work of a broad coalition of organizations, the Senate now won't consider its version until next year.

Rep. John Conyers, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, needs to vote NO on this legislation. He was an early supporter of the bill, and continues to back it. But the more calls he receives today from the progressive community, the more likely we will be to change his position.

Call Rep. Conyers today and tell him to reject Internet censorship.

TOMORROW: Online forum with Reps. Grijalva and Ellison

Rebuild the Dream
POWERED BY
MoveOn.org Civic Action

Online Thursday: the 99% Act

Tomorrow, at 6:15 p.m. Eastern, we're hosting a live streaming online forum about the 99% Act—with Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairs Reps. Raúl Grijalva and Keith Ellison. Will you join in?

Join

Dear friend,

Yesterday, the Congressional Progressive Caucus introduced a bill to help turn our economy around. It's based heavily on the Contract for the American Dream—a plan that 130,000 of us crafted, and 300,000 endorsed.

Tomorrow, at 6:15 p.m. Eastern, we're hosting a live streaming online forum about the bill—the 99% Act—with Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairs Reps. Raúl Grijalva and Keith Ellison. This is a great chance to hear from, and interact with, two of the leading progressive champions in the House.

Can you join in online tomorrow, Thursday the 14th?

Yes, I'll be there!

We'll broadcast live from Washington, D.C., and you'll be able to join in the discussion, ask questions, and see what others have to say.

Reps. Grijalva and Ellison will be joined in a roundtable discussion by two everyday heroes who have stepped up to speak out for change. Tiffany Mellers, an unemployed Army reservist and mother of three, and Molly Katchpole, a 22-year-old recent college graduate who succeeded in forcing Bank of America to drop its monthly $5 debit card fee.

They'll discuss how the 99% Act takes ideas from the Contract for the American Dream and puts them into a comprehensive bill for fixing our broken economy—from creating 5 million jobs in two years, to ending the war in Afghanistan, to a new tax on millionaires and Wall Street greed.1

Can you join us online tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. Eastern time?

Yes, I'll tune in tomorrow!

Thanks for all you do.

This bill won't pass

Rebuild the Dream
POWERED BY
MoveOn.org Civic Action

RESTORE the American dream for the 99%

The RESTORE the American Dream for the 99% Act is a bold new bill in Congress that would create 5 million new jobs, raise taxes on millionaires and Wall Street, eliminate give-aways to big oil, and more. Sign the petition to show your support.

Sign

Dear friend,

I want you to endorse a bill in Congress that won't pass anytime soon.

I know that sounds odd. But right now Congress is so broken that any talk of real solutions is painfully rare and gets steamrolled quickly.

Today is a turning point. This morning the Congressional Progressive Caucus introduced the RESTORE the American Dream Act for the 99%.

This bill is exciting and refreshing: it is a real plan to fix the economy.

This is our chance to shift the debate in Washington. It's up to us to stand with the few brave leaders in Congress who are willing to push for the "unrealistic" ideas. The truth is these are common sense, workable solutions that should be no-brainers. Let's force anyone in Congress who stands in the way to explain why—or get out of the way.

Will you show your support?

Click here to endorse the RESTORE the American Dream for the 99% Act.

The bill has great ideas in it. And no wonder, because the ideas came from you! This bill is based on the Contract for the American Dream—a plan for turning our economy around crafted by more than 130,000 of us and endorsed by 300,000. Amazingly, this bill includes nine out of the ten points of the Contract for the American Dream.

Key highlights from the bill:1
  • Creates more than 5 million jobs that put Americans back to work
  • New taxes for millionaires and Wall Street speculation
  • Creates a national infrastructure bank and invests in America
  • Eliminates handouts to big oil
  • Adds a public option to the Affordable Care Act
  • Ends the wars and reduces Pentagon waste
  • Saves $2.4 trillion over 10 years
You probably know someone who can't find a job, or who is facing foreclosure, or who has gone broke due to illness. We all know people who are struggling, because people are struggling everywhere. For far too long, this reality has been sidelined from the conversation in Congress.

Now it's time to flip the script.

Click here to endorse the RESTORE the American Dream for the 99% Act.

Incredible

Submit your photo
Dear MoveOn members,

Wow, you are incredible!!

Over 15 million people have seen my testimony about my two moms before the Iowa legislature, after MoveOn sent it out last Thursday. I can't tell you how much that means to me, my moms, and my little sister, and families like ours all across the country.

I think that one of the reasons my video resonated with people is that it embodies a simple truth: love is what makes a family. It's what binds us together as we work through the hard times, so we can enjoy the good ones.

I'm going to keep telling that truth. But I'm only one guy. Every single person has an incredible amount of power to shape and change our world for the better, but imagine what we can do together. That's why I am asking for your help in telling this simple truth.

The folks at MoveOn and I had an idea: get as many people as possible to take their family holiday photos holding signs that say 'Love Makes a Family,' and 'Equality for ALL Families in 2012'. This time of year is all about family, so let's use our holiday photos to send a message of love for ALL families.

MoveOn has created a special Tumblr site where you can post your holiday pictures. It's really easy, and they are going to make a video out of all of these Love Makes a Family photos.

You can see everyone's photos by clicking here.

While we won the battle in Iowa, my moms' rights as a married couple stop at our state's border. And I know that hundreds of thousands of other families like mine aren't lucky enough to live in a state where their parents can be married. Instead, they have to spend thousands of dollars to adopt their own kids and get power of attorney to take care of everyday life if or when something bad happens.

A lot of people out there just don't know and haven't met families like mine. And that's why I've been traveling around speaking about my two moms, and why I'm writing a book about my family.

Now I'm asking you and other folks to show the people you love that you believe in equality for all.

Will you take a family holiday photo while holding an 'Equality for ALL Families in 2012' or 'Love Makes a Family sign? Just click here for more instructions and a form to upload your family's picture:

And check out all of the photos others have submitted.

Thanks for all the love and support.

Onward.

–Zach

P.S. I've been so honored that so many people shared the video of my testimony, and I'm working overtime to finish my book about all of this, appropriately titled "My Two Moms"—please check it out!

Fighting foreclosure

Rebuild the Dream Powered by MoveOn.org Civic Action

Dear friend,

On Tuesday, all over America, the 99% launched "Occupy Our Homes." In dozens of cities people joined occupations and major protests to defend families threatened by foreclosure. They bravely confronted greedy banks that are letting houses sit empty while too many people struggle to find a place to call home.

I believe Tuesday marks the opening of a major new front for our movement, and I am so inspired by the stories I've heard of brave homeowners and their communities rising up together to say "enough" to the foreclosure crisis.

I want to share a truly touching video that tells the story of one of these homeowners. Take a look:

Watch the video

The story is powerful and sharing it helps us all find our own courage to take action. When you hear Vietnam veteran Bobby Hull in Minneapolis, who is facing foreclosure in the dead of winter, you know that these people shouldn't lose their homes. And you know that it's the big banks that are in the wrong.

So take a look and if you have a story of your own to share, you can submit it to the folks at Occupy Our Homes and use your own voice to help push back against foreclosure:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=268676&id=33684-10220574-wMjF%3Dyx&t=3

Defending our homes and putting an end to the foreclosure crisis is such a powerful next step for the growing 99% movement. Together we can hold the big Wall Street banks accountable and rebuild the American Dream.

Thanks for all you do.

Rebuild the Dream and MoveOn are committed to nonviolence in the long tradition of protest movements throughout our history that have brought America closer to our founding dream—liberty and justice for all. As progressives we respect all people, and will not support or endorse any violence or property destruction.

Breaking: New Elizabeth Warren poll

We've got to make it a top priority to elect Elizabeth Warren and other candidates like her who will never stop fighting for the 99%. We're ready to launch a massive campaign to help them, but we need to know if we can count on your help. Can you chip in $5 to MoveOn's effort today?

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

Why are the 1% funneling big money to Karl Rove's attack ads against Elizabeth Warren? Because she scares them. Listen to her words and just imagine her in the Senate:

For years I worked to expose how Wall Street and the Big Banks are crushing middle class families. It just isn't right. I stood up to the Big Banks and their army of Washington lobbyists. I worked to hold them accountable. I led the fight for a new agency to protect consumers—and we got it. But Washington is still rigged for the big guys, and that's got to change.1

A new poll shows Warren with a clear lead for the first time, but the big threat now is Rove's attacks—in fact Rove just launched a new $524,000 attack ad against Warren this morning.2

We've got to make it a top priority to elect Elizabeth Warren and other candidates like her who will never stop fighting for the 99%. And with the first primaries in these races less than 100 days away, we need to start immediately.

We'll create ads and videos to educate voters about Warren's fiery populism and her opponent's corporate backers, and we'll organize actions to get those themes into the media. We'll send MoveOn members out talking to voters, and we'll bring the same approaches to other key races around the country. But we need to know whether we'll have the resources to pull it off. Please support MoveOn's effort today:

Chip in $5 to MoveOn's big plan to elect Elizabeth Warren and other true progressives.

The rise of the 99% movement—the fight-back in Wisconsin, the Occupations and actions against Wall Street, the campaigns to stop Congress from siding with the 1%—creates an important opportunity to build progressive electoral power. We need to focus on electing champions who'll fight for the 99%, rather than pouring our energy into electing marginal Democrats, so that we build power to take on economic inequality in 2012 and beyond.

We're preparing a massive campaign for 2012 to help elect Elizabeth Warren and identify hundreds of other candidates who will stand up for the 99% and help them win races up and down the ballot. We want to help ten times more candidates than we've helped in previous years. Here's some of what we'll do:

  • Prioritize several key races with candidates like Elizabeth Warren, Ilya Sheyman, and Eric Griego, who stand strongly with the 99% movement and will be champions in places like Washington or Albany.
  • Direct grassroots support for hundreds of candidates who commit to supporting the 99%, including mobilizing MoveOn's 5 million members to call voters, go door-to-door, and more.
  • Create a progressive ballot guide that lets local progressives know who should get their vote, from school board to statewide races.

But we can't pull it off without you. We need to take on Wall Street together. Can you chip in $5 to MoveOn today so we can launch this campaign immediately?

Dear friend,

The Wall Street banks, the media, and the 1% are watching to see if public support for the 99% movement drops off as winter sets in.

Don't be evil, Google

Click here to sign your name:
"Google, stand up for democracy and your users—quit the U.S. Chamber of Commerce!"

Sign the Petition!

Dear MoveOn member,

Right now we have a huge opportunity to deal what's being called a "serious blow to one of Washington's most powerful lobbies."1

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is an army of lobbyists for hire by mega-corporations like banks and those in the fossil fuel industry. In 2009, it spent more corporate money on lobbying than the next five biggest spenders combined.2 And 93% of its campaign spending goes to support Republicans and attack Democrats.3

Google is a paying member of the Chamber, which means that part of the money they make from Google users—ordinary people like us using Gmail, Google search, and other Google products—goes into the Chamber's pockets to fight for Wall Street and Big Oil. But the Washington Post and Politico recently reported that at Google headquarters, employees are intensely debating whether Google should quit the Chamber in the next few weeks.4

Google quitting would be a huge blow to the Chamber's credibility. That's why we're partnering with SumOfUs, a new movement to give consumers a voice in corporate decisions, to make the case to Google that they should leave the Chamber. As Google users, we can help those Google employees make their case.

Sign the petition now from Google users to Google employees to ask them to stand up for us and our democracy by quitting the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Google's unofficial motto is "Don't Be Evil." And they want to do what's right for their users. But by staying in the Chamber, they're legitimizing an institution that's hurting their users all around the world every day. That's why we're partnering with the new organization SumOfUs to encourage Google to leave the Chamber.

There are dozens of reasons for Google employees—and Google users—to want Google out of the Chamber. Google's business model relies on a free and open Internet; right now the Chamber is pushing Congress to pass an Internet censorship bill that would empower big corporations to shut off ordinary citizens' websites without even a hearing.5 Google invests millions in renewable energy; the Chamber has called for a "Scopes monkey trial" to assault the science of climate change.6 Google leads the world in workplace policies supporting LGBT employees; the Chamber fights against basic anti-discrimination laws. 7

The Chamber's power rests on its credibility as a voice for business. When Apple quit the Chamber in 2009 for ideological reasons, it made headlines all over the world.8 If Google quits, it will be huge news and will undermine the Chamber's influence in Washington.

Google users are the 99%. The Chamber is the 1%. Join the call now for Google to be a champion for its users all over the world by quitting the U.S. Chamber of Commerce:

Thanks for all you do.
