Devastating to New York

Report your call
Dear MoveOn member,

Heads up: Congress is debating a budget plan that would be devastating to New York. Will you pass this along?

Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer need to hear from all of us about it right now, before they cut a deal in the next few days.

Please spread the word about all of these proposed cuts to New York:

  • $188 million would be cut from federal funds for clean and safe water in New York.1
  • 8,600 New York children would be immediately cut from Head Start, which provides comprehensive early childhood development services for at-risk children ages zero to five.2
  • $406 million would be cut from Pell Grants, affecting all 584,000 higher education students with those grants in New York.3
  • Job training and employment services would be effectively eliminated for 84,000 dislocated workers, 83,000 low-income adults, and 18,000 youths age 14 to 21.4
  • $7.9 million would be cut from law enforcement assistance, taking cops off the beat.5

It's especially galling when the same budget protects tax breaks for corporations like GE and the very rich.

Just last night the news broke that Congress may be close to striking a deal on the budget. Now is the only time we can influence the outcome.

Can you call Sens. Gillibrand and Schumer and ask them to oppose these cuts in the budget? You can pick one of the cuts in this list to highlight in your call.

The cuts that the Republicans are proposing would disproportionately hit those who can least afford it in New York, and it's up to us to stop them.

Thanks for all you do.

A slap in the face

Dear MoveOn member,

According to The New York Times, last year General Electric (GE) made over $14.2 billion in profit, but paid NO federal tax.1 None.

In fact, thanks to the millions GE spent lobbying Congress, we American taxpayers actually owed GE $3.2 billion in tax credits.2

Now GE is slashing health benefits and retirement benefits for new employees among non-union workers and is expected to push unions to accept similar cutbacks3, while its CEO, Jeff Immelt, gets a 100% pay raise.4

What's worse? Immelt now sits as chair of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness (Jobs Council), representing corporate America to the President on matters like job creation and corporate taxation. That's a slap in the face to every hardworking, tax-paying American—especially GE employees.

That's why we're teaming up with Russ Feingold and his new group Progressives United today to call for Immelt to go. Will you join the call?

Sign the petition calling for GE CEO Jeff Immelt to step down as chair of the President's Jobs Council.

One of the chief ways GE avoids paying taxes is by shifting a large portion of its profits overseas, and jobs follow.5 Now GE's CEO is the person charged with helping the President create jobs here in America. That's just perverse.

And if the American people got back just the $3.2 billion GE took in tax credits, it would pay for the programs that House Republicans want to gut, like community health centers providing care to over three million low-income people6 and food and health care assistance to pregnant women, new moms, and children.7 We'd even have enough left to save the jobs of over 21,000 teachers across the country.8

The American deficit is being weighed down by hundreds of billions spent on bailing out major corporations. The tea party's plan is to make working families pay through devastating cuts, instead of making corporations with billions in profits pay their fair share.

But if we can hold Immelt accountable for GE's corporate irresponsibility, the nation will turn its attention to the injustice of corporate tax evasion in the face of the Republicans' budget-slashing attack on working families.

Make it all happen by signing the petition calling for Immelt to go. Just click below—and share this email with your friends, family, and social networks today.

The Wisconsin spirit is spreading

In response to the wave of Republican attacks on unions and working people, the entire labor movement has called for a massive national day of protests, vigils, and work site events.

Can you help make April 4 an overwhelming day of solidarity for working people?

Yes, I'll be there!
Dear MoveOn member,

April 4, 2011 is shaping up to be one of the most important progressive days of action in nearly a decade.

It's the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., who was killed 43 years ago while traveling to Memphis to stand in solidarity with striking sanitation workers demanding their chance to attain the American Dream.

Now, in response to the new wave of Republican attacks on unions and working people, the entire labor movement has called for a massive national day of protests, vigils, and work site events on April 4. Virtually the entire progressive movement has joined in.

Can you help make next Monday an overwhelming day of solidarity for working people by attending an event in your area? Click here to find the April 4 event closest to you:

http://local.we-r-1.org/partners/moveon

Working people in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana have inspired an activist spirit that's spreading across the country, and this is our chance to keep the momentum going. This is our chance to stand up to the Republicans and demand protection for workers' rights and the restoration of the American Dream for all of us.

The events are part of "We Are One," a grassroots effort led by a broad coalition of unions and progressive allies committed to realizing Dr. King's goal of economic justice for all. The events include actions, teach-ins, work site discussions, vigils, faith events, and more.

You can simply attend an event in your area or if you have creative ideas for an event in a public place like a park, in your work site, a teach-in at a college near you, or even something at your house, you can volunteer to host your own.

We need to keep building our strength until the American Dream can finally be attained by everyone. On April 4, we will keep the momentum going. And we will not stop.

Will you join us?

BREAKING: House votes to defund NPR

Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday, House Republicans passed an "emergency" bill that would ban any federal money from going to NPR.

This is it: our last chance to save public broadcasting, after more than a decade of fending off Republican attacks. More than 600,000 people have already signed the petition, and we're aiming for 750,000 to show the Senate how much support public broadcasting has.

Can you help us reach our goal by sharing the petition on Facebook right now?

Thanks for all you do.

–Daniel, Amy, Adam, Wes, and the rest of the team

P.S. You can also just forward the email below asking people to sign:

The Republicans in the House of Representatives just passed what they called "emergency" legislation to zero out funding for NPR. We're on the verge of losing this fight, after more than a decade.

We need to tell Republicans that cutting off funding was unacceptable last time they were in charge, and it's unacceptable now.

I've signed the petition to save NPR and PBS. Can you join me at the link below?

Thanks!

So wrong

"Cutting food aid to hungry women and children in the middle of an economic crisis is wrong. Please oppose the devastating cuts in the Republican budget."

Sign the petition
Dear MoveOn member,

What kind of country cuts food aid to hungry pregnant women and children in the middle of an economic crisis—while giving a giant tax break to billionaires?

Seriously. WTF?!

The Republicans are winning the battle over the budget, hands down, even though what they're fighting for is, put simply, immoral. A cut of at least $400 million from a crucial program that puts food on the table for pregnant women and small children. Crippling the EPA. Completely eliminating funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, AmeriCorps, and high-speed rail.1

Instead of creating jobs, the Republican budget would destroy 700,000 of them. Our only hope is a public outcry strong enough to stiffen Democrats' spines and cause Republicans to back down.

GOP declares NPR "emergency"

Yesterday, MoveOn members joined with CREDO, Free Press, and members of the cast of "Sesame Street" to deliver 1 million petition signatures supporting NPR and PBS. But today, Republicans are pushing an "emergency" bill to defund NPR.

Can you call Rep. McCarthy right now and tell her to support NPR and PBS?

Representative Carolyn McCarthy
Phone: 202-225-5516

Report your call
Dear MoveOn member,

House Republicans have declared an "emergency" today. Is it about unemployment? The situation in Libya? The disaster in Japan? Nope, it's about defunding NPR.

They're taking up an emergency bill that would ban any federal money from going to NPR or its affiliates.

A right-wing blogger's hidden-camera video has NPR on the defensive, even though it was so misleadingly doctored that even Glenn Beck's website questioned its credibility.1 But Republicans want to use this moment to take away NPR's funding for good.

We can't let that happen. Can you call your representative, Carolyn McCarthy, and tell her and her fellow Democrats that we're counting on them to stand strong against this unprecedented attack on NPR?

Here's where to call:

Representative Carolyn McCarthy
Phone: 202-225-5516

Then, please report your call by clicking here:

http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FHNY_04&cp_id=1540&id=26525-10220574-bTDyNcx&t=3

When you call, you can also let Rep. McCarthy know that NPR has huge support. Just yesterday MoveOn members, along with friends from Free Press, CREDO, and the cast of "Sesame Street," delivered more than 1 million petitions—in tote bags of course—calling on Congress to support full and permanent funding for NPR and PBS.

But we have to stop the Republican attacks, and the only way is to remind our leaders in Washington that public broadcasting enjoys massive public support and that we'll hold them accountable if they cut its funding. Even among Republican voters, a clear majority support public funding for PBS and NPR.2

But with the emergency bill being considered today, we have to speak out immediately, before it's too late. Can you call Rep. McCarthy right now to tell her to oppose efforts to cut NPR's funding?

Here is the number to call:

Representative Carolyn McCarthy

How to help Japan

Dear MoveOn member,

The devastation in Japan is simply horrific. The death toll is rising by the hour. Tens of thousands remain missing, more than 450,000 people have been displaced, and millions lack access to food, water, electricity, and medicine.1

And as rescue and relief workers struggle to operate around the clock, Japan must also contend with partial meltdowns and the escalating risk of an even worse catastrophe at several nuclear reactors.2

Right now the people of Japan are in crisis, their resources are stretched thin, and they need our help. Many organizations are already on the ground providing relief, including Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross. You can provide immediate assistance by donating to help fund the emergency response:

  • Doctors Without Borders is sending highly trained teams of doctors into the hardest-hit and most difficult-to-reach regions of Japan.  (Note: Doctors Without Borders is not accepting contributions "earmarked" for Japan, but rather drawing from general support to enable their important response work there.) Donate here:

Shame

We've got to stop Republicans from destroying the American Dream, in Wisconsin and around the country. So we're gathering coast-to-coast this Tuesday after work at events to "Defend the Dream"—and we still need a host in Inwood. Can you sign up today?

Sign up to host!

Dear MoveOn member,

Last night, Wisconsin Republicans rammed through their attack on workers' rights in a shameful—and probably illegal—power grab.1

Wisconsin progressives surrounded the capital last night and are mounting more protests today. To support them—and to oppose Republicans in Congress who are pushing similar attacks on all of our communities—we've launched a huge "Defend the Dream" day of action next Tuesday.

Hundreds of events are already planned—but there isn't one yet in Inwood. Can you sign up today to host an event?

At state capitols, parks, schools, libraries, and other public institutions that face huge funding cuts in the GOP budget, we'll gather to hear from people who will be most affected, like teachers and firefighters, and show our solidarity against these devastating cuts and attacks on workers' rights.

Help make sure people in Inwood have a way to take part in the Defend the Dream day of action on Tuesday: Sign up today to host an event. Just click here to get started:

http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/create.html?action_id=239&id=26455-10220574-46OnrIx&t=3

Never hosted before? No worries—it's simple, fun, and we'll make sure you have everything you need, from a step-by-step guide to sample materials. Just pick a location—somewhere that will be affected by the Republicans' vicious budget cuts and attacks on workers: in front of a school, park, library, hospital, daycare center, or your state capitol. We'll make sure you're set with all the tools you need to do the rest.

Republicans in Idaho and Ohio have already voted for similar anti-worker bills like the one in Wisconsin.2 And nationally, the GOP budget would gut health care, environmental protections, housing assistance, food aid, and more. It's insane—and a direct assault on the American Dream.3

We need to take our cues from the brave people in Madison and stand up next Tuesday to say "No More!"

Inwood is counting on you—can you organize an event after work next week? Just click the link below to sign up:

BREAKING: Power grab in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Republicans just used the nuclear option to jam through their anti-worker bill. We can't let them get away with it. Can you help raise $500,000 tonight to recall the Republican senators who did this by donating $5 to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin via ActBlue?

Contribute now

Dear MoveOn member,

Minutes ago, Wisconsin Republicans made a shocking power grab—ramming through their partisan attack on workers' rights without a single Democrat present.

It's shameful, unprecedented, and probably illegal. We can't let them get away with this.

We have to recall the Republican state senators who did this.

Progressives in Wisconsin have already gathered thousands of signatures to do just that, but they need our help to get the job done. Let's send a clear message that trying to destroy the American Dream is a surefire way to get booted from office.

Can you help raise $500,000 tonight for the recall efforts, to make sure these senators lose their seats over their outrageous actions?

Click here to chip in $5 via ActBlue

What happened?

With the Wisconsin 14 out of state for weeks, Republicans have been unable to jam through Governor Walker's bill taking away union rights from public workers.

But tonight, the Republicans decided to use the nuclear option. After modestly changing the Governor's budget bill, they "declared" that it was a different kind of bill that they could pass without the Democrats and passed it—all in a half-hour.1

Thousands of Wisconsinites have already flooded the capitol and will occupy it overnight. And Wisconsin Democrats are already exploring legal challenges to stop the law. But it's up to the rest of us to make sure that these senators pay a heavy price for their actions, so everyone gets the message: Attack workers and middle class families, and there will be consequences.

Help raise $500,000 tonight to send these Republicans packing:

Defend the Dream on Tuesday?

The GOP budget is an all-out attack on the American Dream. And to stop it, we've got to sound the alarm. So we're mobilizing hundreds of Defend the Dream events this Tuesday. We still need an event host in Inwood—can you sign up?

Host a Defend the Dream event

Dear MoveOn member,

Force states to fire 65,000 teachers. Kill 700,000 jobs. And send 10,000 veterans into homelessness.

That's what the Republican budget would do.1 And that's not all, by a long shot. With $100 billion in cuts, their budget would hit at the heart of programs that just about every American depends on—all the while protecting tax giveaways for millionaires.2

This is nothing less than a full-out assault on the American Dream. And with Republicans in Wisconsin and other states proposing massive budget cuts of their own, we have to fight back.

So this Tuesday, March 15, we're mobilizing to Defend the Dream in communities across America. We'll hold events in front of the very places hit hardest by the GOP budget—schools, libraries, parks, and fire stations—to send a message to Republicans, in Congress and around the country, that slashing programs for working Americans while protecting the rich and big corporations is simply unacceptable.

We don't have a gathering yet in Inwood—can you host a Defend the Dream event on Tuesday after work? Hosting is fun and simple, and we'll give you all the tools and tips you need. Click here to organize an event:

http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/create.html?action_id=239&id=26440-10220574-XWkezsx&t=2

Hosting a Defend the Dream event is so important. We know members in your area are ready to act. By hosting, you multiply your own impact by giving them a way to get involved.

It's also straightforward. You find a location—any public place that could be impacted by GOP budget cuts, such as a school, park, fire station, or community center—and we'll give you the support you need for the rest: a step-by-step guide, sample materials, and a conference call beforehand to answer any questions you might have.

These events are a crucial part of our emergency mobilization to stop the Republican budget. So many people don't yet know what's at stake, and how devastating these cuts would be to their communities. By pulling folks together next week, at schools, libraries, and other crucial community venues under attack in the Republican budget, we can spread the word and make sure Congress is hearing from constituents that this awful budget cannot pass.

We still need a host in Inwood—can you sign up today? Just click here to get started:

Amazing and inspiring

Dear MoveOn member,

The struggle in Wisconsin is still ongoing, but MoveOn members like you have already played a pivotal role in fighting back against Governor Scott Walker's radical attack on workers' rights.

Walker expected his budget bill to sail through, but instead, it's sparked a national backlash and energized millions of people. And that's thanks, in part, to you.

Since the fight began:
  • Thousands of Wisconsin MoveOn members attended the massive demonstrations in Madison, made calls to their state legislators, and sent almost 10,000 messages to Governor Walker, which protesters plastered all over the walls outside Walker's office when he refused to accept them.

  • MoveOn members contributed more than $100,000 to the Wisconsin 14, the brave Democratic state senators who left the state to prevent Republicans from jamming through Walker's proposal—providing them a huge boost to fight back against Republican attacks.

  • MoveOn members sent more than 260,000 statements of support to the Wisconsin 14. We delivered the statements—all 5,700 pages of them—to State Senator Chris Larson. He was thrilled to share them with his colleagues and posted on Facebook: "Thank you for standing with us! (And yes, people actually do get paper copies of those forms you fill out online. Thank you MoveOn.org)."

  • MoveOn members nationwide contributed more than $445,000 to support the efforts to recall the Republican state senators who refuse to negotiate. The folks running the recall report they're off to an amazing start, beating their signature goal in the first weekend by 35%, and they're hugely grateful for the early fundraising.

  • MoveOn members held solidarity rallies in every state capital—our biggest in years, and on just four days' notice—to say that we are all Wisconsin and we won't stand by while Republicans try to kill the American Dream.
It's an amazing and inspiring list. And this fight is far from over. Even if Governor Walker manages to push through his disastrous proposal, the recall efforts targeting Republicans are already off to an amazing start and several of those who support Walker could be thrown out of office as soon as June.

With similar fights happening across the country and in Washington, we've got a long way to go before we put the American Dream back in reach for all Americans. But Wisconsin has sparked a national uprising and given us the strength to fight back.

For the moment though, we just wanted to take the time to say thanks, for all you do.

Daniel, Joan, Kat, Lenore, and the rest of the team

P.S. With Republicans in Washington pushing devastating federal budget cuts—to education, student loans, NPR, environmental protection, family planning, health and nutrition programs for pregnant women and small children, and more—we're looking to highlight the stories of those who'd be affected by the cuts. If any of the Republican budget cuts would affect you or your family, please click here to share your story:

Devastating

We have to get the word out about how devastating the Republican budget would be to our communities, and let Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand know that we're expecting them to stand strong against it. Can you call them now and tell them to oppose the Republicans' immoral cuts?

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: 202-224-4451

I called Congress

Dear MoveOn member,

Did you see the email we sent yesterday about the horrific impact of the GOP's budget proposal? (If you didn't, it's below).

Congress needs to hear from all of us right away, because the only chance we have to stop this budget is if Senate Democrats stand united against it. And the first vote could come today.1

Can you call Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand and tell them to stand strong against Republicans' massive, devastating cuts?

Senator Charles Schumer
Phone: 202-224-6542

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Phone: 202-224-4451

Then, please report your call by clicking here:

http://pol.moveon.org/call?tg=FSNY_1.FSNY_2&cp_id=1534&id=26429-10220574-RdQAPRx&t=2

After you've called, please spread the word about this terrible budget. Believe it or not, the list below is just the beginning. For example, the budget would also block the EPA from enforcing the Clean Air Act and cleaning up coal-fired power plants, and put America's drinking water and waterways at risk of sewage and urban runoff pollution.2

When people realize how awful these cuts would be for them, their families, and their communities, we win the debate.

Thanks for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,

It's time to sound the alarm.

This week, Congress could cut a deal on the budget. And if Republicans get their way, billions will be cut from vital programs that millions of Americans count on—while tax cuts for the richest are protected.

But most people don't have any idea what's at stake—and how devastating these cuts would be to their communities—even though the cuts could take effect within weeks. So we're launching an emergency campaign to spread the word. Republicans want to gut programs with enormous public support, and hope no one notices. So it's up to all of us to spark a public outcry before it's too late.

The devastating impact these cuts will have on our country—and on your community—is unprecedented. Check out the list below. If we can get it out to a million people, we can start to sound the alarm and stop the GOP. Click here to post on Facebook and Twitter, or simply forward this email.

Thanks for all you do.

Top 10 Worst Things about the Republicans' Immoral Budget

The Republican budget would:

1. Destroy 700,000 jobs, according to an independent economic analysis.

2. Zero out federal funding for National Public Radio and public television.

3. Cut $1.3 billion from community health centers—which will deprive more than 3 million low-income people of health care over the next few months.

4. Cut nearly a billion dollars in food and health care assistance to pregnant women, new moms, and children.

5. Kick more than 200,000 children out of pre-school by cutting funds for Head Start.

6. Force states to fire 65,000 teachers and aides, dramatically increasing class sizes, thanks to education cuts.

7. Cut some or all financial aid for 9.4 million low- and middle-income college students.

8. Slash $1.6 billion from the National Institutes of Health, a cut that experts say would "send shockwaves" through cancer research, likely result in cuts to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's research, and cause job losses.

9. End the only federal family planning program, including cutting all federal funding that goes to Planned Parenthood to support cancer screenings and other women's health care.

10. Send 10,000 low-income veterans into homelessness by cutting in half the number of veterans who get housing vouchers this year.

We've got to get the word out about this awful budget—right away. Please, share this with your friends on Facebook and Twitter, or by forwarding this email, today.

Sunday in Westbury: Defend the dream meeting

MoveOn members are planning our next major mobilization for the American Dream movement. There's a meeting in Westbury on Sunday, Mar. 6, 2011, at 2:00 PM. Can you make it?

Dear MoveOn member,

The American Dream movement is just getting started.

Saturday's massive mobilization showed us that Americans are fired up to defend the American Dream. And the public is on our side: A recent New York Times poll shows that the majority of Americans oppose Republicans' anti-worker, legislation.1

With the backing of the American public, we need to go on the offensive. So we're planning a  "Defend the Dream" 50-state day of action in mid-March. MoveOn members in your area are meeting up to plan the local event—and we need folks like you pitching in.

There's a Save the American Dream Meeting in Westbury on Sunday, Mar. 6, 2011, at 2:00 PM. Can you make it?

Yes, I'll be there!

To beat Republicans and the tea party, progressives everywhere need to go full throttle. At the meeting, we'll celebrate our rally success and make plans for the next "Defend the Dream" mobilization. The same group of dedicated MoveOn members who planned Saturday's rally are meeting in Westbury. We'll be even more powerful if more people join in—can you attend a campaign meeting on Sunday in Westbury? Click here to RSVP and get involved:

Yes, I'll be there!

Thanks for all you do.
