Update: Run Chellie run!

Dear MoveOn member,

Amazing! Since Friday, MoveOn members have pledged more than $275,000 for Chellie Pingree if she runs for U.S. Senate to replace Olympia Snowe here in Maine. That's on top of more than 3,000 people who have signed our "Run Chellie Run" petition.

Chellie told The Huffington Post that the outpouring of support is really influencing her decision to run.1 But she's not in yet, so the "Draft Chellie" movement must continue.

We know Chellie will be a fantastic progressive champ in the Senate. But there's another reason why we need her in the race: We need to send a woman to the Senate.

Just think: If Olympia Snowe is replaced by a man, that will leave just 16 women and 84 men in the Senate at a time when even birth control is under attack and people are talking about rolling back women's rights to the 1960s. 84 men and 16 women in the Senate? You gotta be kidding.

To make sure Chellie hears how important it is to have more, not fewer, women in the U.S. Senate, we've started a photo petition. You can take your picture with a sign about Chellie, or about how we need to make 2012 the Year of Progressive Women. Then add your picture to the photo petition website. Photos of men and women are welcome!

Remember that all-male panel testifying before Congress about women's access to birth control the other week? If there was ever a clear indication of why we need more women in Washington, that was it.

As Senator Bernie Sanders said last week, "If the United States Senate had 83 women and 17 men rather than 83 men and 17 women, my strong guess is that a bill like this would never even make it to the floor."2

At a time when everyone from Rush Limbaugh to Bill O'Reilly to Rick Santorum have gone to war on women's rights and are launching personal attacks against any woman how has the nerve to even speak her mind, it's more important than ever that strong, smart, progressive women like Chellie run for higher office.3

Women's issues are at the fore now because of the actions of many Republicans in Congress. That's why I was one of the very first people to sign the "Run Chellie Run" petition, and why I urge you to take a minute on this Sunday to contribute your photo to the "Run Chellie Run" photo petition.

In the face of this current dialogue in Washington, I believe Chellie Pingree is our best candidate. Help me to convince her today!

Thanks for all you do.
