Pass the New York Paid Family Leave Act!

Below is an email from Elizabeth Gedmark of A Better Balance, who created a petition at SignOn.org, a new site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear New York MoveOn member,

Working families across New York State need the security of paid time off to care for a new child or seriously ill family member. For too many workers, the birth of a child or family health emergency drives their family into poverty because they lose wages or even worse their jobs.

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act guarantees only unpaid leave and excludes half of all workers. The Paid Family Leave Insurance Act for New York state would provide workers with partial payment of their salaries for up to 12 weeks to care for a family member, including a new child, or for a personal illness. New Jersey and California are the only states that provide any paid leave.

Paid family leave improves the health of our families. It helps workers, especially new mothers, stay in the workforce after childbirth. And businesses benefit by having healthier workers and reduced turnover.

It's time for Governor Andrew Cuomo to follow in California and New Jersey's footsteps and make paid family leave a priority now! That's why I created a petition to Governor Cuomo on SignOn.org, which says:

Please support the Paid Family Leave Insurance Act. Working New Yorkers need the security of paid leave to recover from a personal illness or to care for a new child or seriously ill family member. Improve the health of our families and support our workers' financial stability by providing all New Yorkers with paid family leave for a full 12 weeks.
