Re: Monsanto's latest outrage

Hi—wow! We blew past our initial goal to support campaigns taking on Monsanto around the country, which means that we'll be able to help hundreds of MoveOn members stand up to the corporate giant. But with the farm bill, and its Monsanto-sponsored amendments, coming to a vote next week, now is the time to make this campaign even bigger. If we can raise $100,000 today, we'll be able to launch a creative media campaign to expose Monsanto's true face. Can you pitch in $5 to help make this happen?

Monsanto may have finally gone too far. Progressives in Congress are fighting to repeal the infamous "Monsanto Protection Act" and block Monsanto's attacks on state GMO labeling laws, and MoveOn members are leading the grassroots backlash. Can you chip in $5 to help stand up to Monsanto?

Chip in $5

Dear MoveOn member,

Is there a company in the world more evil than Monsanto? I don't think so.

Last year, Monsanto spent nearly $6 million on lobbying, and their payoff was the "Monsanto Protection Act," which was written anonymously, passed in secret, and allows Monsanto to keep selling genetically engineered seeds even if a federal court says they may pose a health risk.1

Now, Monsanto has sneaked an amendment into the farm bill that would block GMO labeling laws moving forward in states like Vermont and Connecticut.2

This time, Monsanto may have gone too far. A massive backlash is growing against the Monsanto Protection Act, and Senator Jeff Merkley is demanding a floor vote to repeal it.

We can beat Monsanto, but we don't have much time to get organized, because the farm bill has already passed the House and is being debated in the Senate right now. Can you chip in $5 to help MoveOn members fight back against Monsanto?

Yes, I want to pitch in $5 to help fight back against Monsanto.

We know that we'll never be able to outspend Monsanto, but with your help we can out-organize them with smart, well-timed, targeted campaigning. Together, we can take on Monsanto by:

  • Supporting campaigns all over the country led by MoveOn members targeting their members of Congress, asking them to stand up to Monsanto's influence.
  • Providing financial support for flyers, rallies, transportation and the other crucial nuts and bolts necessary to run a strong campaign.
  • Calling out key members of Congress who are supporting Monsanto over the public interest and making sure the public knows whose side they're on

MoveOn leaders around the country are eager to push forward, but they need your help: If we can raise $150,000 in the next two days, we can help kick-start these campaigns immediately.

Last year, Monsanto's $6 million investment bought them several favorable pieces of legislation. But right now, your investment of $5 can help launch a nationwide movement to make sure that our democracy isn't auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Click here to contribute $5 to support the campaign against Monsanto.

Thanks for all you do.

Elizabeth Warren wants to talk to you

**Join an emergency online briefing on the student loan fight with special guest Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday, June 3—click here to RSVP.**

Dear MoveOn member,

The fight over student loans is coming to a head. More than 434,000 (!) MoveOn members have signed on in support of Sen. Elizabeth Warren's bill for students to get the same low rates on their loans as the big banks do.

But with student loan rates set to double on July 1 if Congress does nothing, Republican members of Congress took a massive step backward. Last week the Republican-controlled House voted to get rid of fixed-interest loans for students entirely—a devastating move which could result in "ballooning financing costs" for new graduates struggling to get by.1

If thousands of people like us don't get involved in this fight now, student loan rates could double—or worse—in just over a month. So we're holding an emergency online briefing on Monday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET with Sen. Elizabeth Warren to talk about the student loan fight, understand some potential solutions, and make sure we're all ready for the monthlong fight ahead.

All you need to join is a computer with an internet connection. Can you join us?

Here are the details:
What: Special Student Loan Briefing with Sen. Elizabeth Warren
When: Monday, June 3, 9 p.m. ET (8 CT/ 7 MT/ 6 PT)
Where: MoveOn.org website—we'll send you the details when it gets closer.

Click here to tell us you'll be listening in—and submit a question for Sen. Warren:

Yes, I'll be there.

Republicans in Congress are used to holding middle-class families hostage to extract concessions from Democrats for their radical agenda. But this time can be different. Sen. Warren came out of the gate with a bold proposal to have students pay the same interest rate on student loans as the big banks pay on their loans while Congress figures out a long-term solution to the problem—and she needs our help to get more attention for it in the halls of Washington, in the media, and across the country.

We can win this fight and show that Congress needs to respond to an agenda that works for us—not their big corporate backers—but only if we organize together in our communities, on college campuses, and everywhere our representatives can see us in this crucial month ahead.

I'll be part of the emergency briefing with Sen. Warren, and I really hope you can join me at this moment. Please click here to RSVP:

Public financing is down to the wire--join us for Lobby Day?

New York is on the verge of passing a Fair Elections package that could bring public financing to our entire state. Can you join the final push at Fair Elections Lobby Day in Albany next week? There's a bus leaving from Woodside at 8:15 AM next Wednesday.

Yes, I can attend

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

If democracy is to survive, we must stop selling public policy to the highest bidder. That's why a core group of New York MoveOn leaders has taken up the challenge of changing the status quo in Albany.

Working with the statewide Fair Elections Coalition, we've gathered more than 7,000 signatures and we're organizing a rally or demonstration every week until the current legislative session ends or we get Fair Elections passed! Will you help?

With the Fair Elections Coalition, we are recruiting members all across the state to join us in Albany on Wednesday, May 29 for Fair Elections Lobby Day

There's a bus leaving from Woodside at 8:15 AM on May 29. Can you join us for Lobby Day?

Yes, I can visit the Capitol to fight for Fair Elections.

No, I can't but I'll sign and share the petition.

There are buses and carpools coming from every corner of the state, and the fun will begin at 11 AM with a rally on the Million Dollar Staircase at the New York State Assembly.

After lunch (provided), we'll visit our state senators and Governor Cuomo to ask them to do what's right for democracy—Pass Fair Elections for New York NOW!

We need this to be the biggest event Albany has seen since last year's mega anti-fracking rally. Can you help make it happen?

Yes, I'll be there!

I can't, but I'll sign and share the petition right now.

Thanks for all you do to make the changes we need!

Sneak peek: Why immigration reform is our fight

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Last night we reached a milestone for immigration reform when a key Senate committee voted 13-5 to send the immigration bill to a vote on the Senate floor.

I'm a MoveOn member from Florida and have been organizing actions with MoveOn for the last three years. I recently joined the MoveOn Immigration Reform Ambassador team because I firmly believe that immigration reform is a human rights issue.

We now have an opportunity to take action locally and nationally to pass comprehensive immigration reform. There are no guarantees, so to do that, we need to inspire more people to join us.

Earlier today I got a chance to take a sneak peek at a brand new video featuring MoveOn members talking personally about LGBTQ families, border security, and human dignity—and about why immigration reform is everyone's fight.

Our friends at CuĂ©ntame did a great job creating this video. I don't want to give away too much about the video. But the first word that came to my mouth was FANTASTIC!

Can you watch this three-minute video right now, share the video with family, friends, and social networks, and then call your senators? Click here to watch the video:

The video features two fellow MoveOn Ambassadors: Yuny Parada and Amos Lim. Yuny is an immigrant from El Salvador, and Amos is an immigrant from Singapore, and both are fighting for immigration reform. Amos has been organizing with other MoveOn members to make sure LGBTQ families are treated equally in our immigration system.

After you've watched the video, call 202-224-3121 (this number is also provided in the video) and ask to be connected to Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Let them know you want them to support immigration reform.

Then, please report your call by clicking here:
Thanks for all you do.

Apple, pay your taxes

Below is an email from Victoria Shorr, a MoveOn member in Pacific Palisades, California. Victoria started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

Dear MoveOn member,

Apple Computers, while benefiting from our great American infrastucture, financed by your taxes and mine, is actively and shamefully evading paying its own taxes.

This is a disgrace, and a terrible precedent for others. We the people must speak out and stop this increasingly common tax-dodging.

That's why I started a petition to Apple Computers, which says:

Apple Computers, while benefiting from our great American infrastucture, financed by your taxes and mine, is actively and shamefully evading paying its own taxes. You can afford it, Apple. It's time to step up and pay your taxes.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Join me and help STOP rape in the military

Below is an email from Congresswoman Jackie Speier and Courage Campaign. Congresswoman Speier started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

Congress: Support the STOP Act to end military rape.

Sign the Petition!

Dear MoveOn member,

Sexual violence in the U.S. military is a crisis. The Pentagon estimates that sexual assaults increased from 19,000 in 2011 to 26,000 in 2012. That's 71 sexual assaults EVERY DAY, and in roughly 56% of cases, the victims are men.

Making matters worse, each branch of the armed forces has its own judicial system, and it's currently legal for base commanders to overturn a jury's guilty verdict, as happened at Aviano Air Force Base in February 2013.

The STOP (Sexual Assault Training Oversight and Prevention) Act takes the prosecution, reporting, oversight, investigation, and victim care of sexual assaults out of the normal military chain of command—which has proven grossly ineffective—and places jurisdiction in an autonomous Sexual Assault Oversight and Response Office.

That's why I started a petition to the United States Congress, which says:

I stand with Congresswoman Jackie Speier in support of the Sexual Assault Training Oversight and Prevention Act (STOP Act) to end military rape.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Our state can pass public financing!

Below is an email from Susan Weber, a MoveOn member in Loudonville, New York. Susan started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

Sign the Petition

Dear New York MoveOn member,

New York is in the grip of a political crime wave. In the last seven years, 32 New York state elected officials have been arrested, indicted, convicted, jailed, censured, or resigned in disgrace.

Regardless of party or ideology, these wrongdoers share one thing: They've abused their positions and perverted our democracy to pursue personal gain. We must change this culture of corruption by changing the system. That means passing publicly financed fair elections that will attract candidates who will work for the public good—not special interests.

We have just over five weeks left to pass reform before the state senate adjourns for the year.

Will you sign my petition calling for fair elections in New York state?

Maine, Connecticut, Arizona, and New York City have public financing systems. The cost for New York state to do the same would be just $2 per voter PER YEAR, less than the cost of a cup of coffee per year! In Connecticut, 75% of candidates have chosen to run with public financing alone. This has made an amazing difference in that state.

We need to demand that New York's Legislature and governor enact meaningful, transparent, enforceable public financing of elections now, including limits on and disclosure of campaign contributions. It's time to eliminate the pay-to-play culture in Albany.

That's why my petition to the New York Senate and Governor Andrew Cuomo says:

With only six weeks left in the legislative session, we call upon you to enact comprehensive campaign finance reform, including: public financing of legislative and statewide races, lower limits on and full disclosure of campaign contributions, and strong enforcement. New Yorkers deserve better than the current pay-to-play culture. To change the culture, you need to change the system!

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Re: The Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act

Incredible! More than 325,000 MoveOn members have signed on in support of Senator Elizabeth Warren's first bill—the Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act. Will you join them? Click here to sign.—Anna

Dear MoveOn member,

The biggest banks in the country—the ones that wrecked our economy and cost millions of Americans their jobs—pay next to nothing on the debt they owe the government, while students pay nine times as much. That isn't right.

That's why I've introduced the Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act to let students take advantage of the same low rates offered to banks for one year while Congress finds a fair, long-term solution on student loan interest rates.

Will you add your voice in support of giving students the same deal as big banks? Click here to sign the petition.

The interest rate on federal subsidized Stafford student loans is set to increase from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1st. If Congress doesn't act soon, millions of college students will see their student loan payments jump.

Some argue that it's too expensive to keep government loans at low interest rates, but the federal government makes low interest loans all the time—just not to everyone. Big banks can borrow money through the Federal Reserve discount window at a rate of about 0.75%.

That's why I started a petition on MoveOn's petition site which says:

Wall Street banks—the ones that wrecked our economy—should not be getting a better interest rate on their government loans than young people trying to go to college.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Unlike the big banks, students don't have armies of lobbyists and lawyers. But they do have us.

Let's do what's right and bank on students.

Thanks!

Five reasons immigration reform matters

Dear MoveOn member,

There's a major national issue that affects tens of millions of families, would add $1.5 trillion to the economy, and gets at the core of the American story—and it seems like people are tuning out.

More than half of Americans aren't paying much attention to the movement for immigration reform and the debate it's generating in Washington—and the fact that people just aren't tuning in "means that either side can still shape public opinion."1

It's up to immigrants and their allies to spread the truth and share our stories—so we can make 2013 the year that we fulfill our promise as a nation of immigrants.

That's why we've put together a five-point guide to what immigration reform is really all about this year. Check it out and then share it on Facebook or Twitter, or just forward this email.

1. Lives are at stake. Every day, the government deports more than 1,100 aspiring Americans—mothers, breadwinners, students—ripping families apart simply for trying to build a better life.2 Our broken immigration system keeps abused immigrants from seeking help, immigrant witnesses from testifying against criminals, and too many working in unsafe and illegal conditions. In a moral America, this must stop.

2. The economy will benefit. Legal status for 11 million would add $1.5 trillion to the U.S. economy via new tax revenue from the increased wages that workers with legal status earn. And Social Security would become more solvent, thanks to the $611 billion that immigrants would add to the system over the next 75 years.3

3. The right is going all out to kill it. Last time immigration reform seemed inevitable—in 2006 and 2007—a vocal conservative minority killed it. Roy Beck, director of the fearmongering nativist group NumbersUSA, has said that conservatives have sent more than 1 million faxes to Congress already this year, and more than 190,000 people have signed his group's petition against reform.4 If Roy Beck and friends are mobilizing to stop immigration reform, you can bet that's a sign that there's something progressive here that's worth fighting for.

4. We have the numbers to get real, meaningful, comprehensive immigration reform now. The 2012 election was a watershed victory for Latino, Asian-American, and progressive voters—thanks in part to MoveOn members' work—and we can't let anyone forget that. 71% of Latino voters and 73% of Asian-American voters cast their ballots for President Obama.5 The rising American electorate that helped elect President Obama is more diverse than ever and demanding real immigration reform—and voters are going to hold all politicians accountable for delivering on their promises.

5. We're here because a social movement has brought us here. From Arizona day laborers who stood up to armed vigilantes to immigrant young people known as DREAMers who risked arrest wearing their graduation caps and gowns—brave women, men, and children have risked everything to make this moment possible.6 They're asking us to stand with them, and it's time we answered their call.

Please share this with your friends and family—and talk about it at the dinner table tonight.

Thanks for all you do.

Unlike the big banks, students don't have armies of lobbyists and lawyers. But they do have us.

Let's do what's right and bank on students.

Thanks!

A bill that will shrink big banks, and can actually pass

Below is an email from U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. Senator Brown started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

Tell Congress: It's time to break up the Wall Street megabanks for good.

Sign the Petition

Dear MoveOn member,

Big Wall Street megabanks are still putting American taxpayers at risk.

Big banking institutions like Bank of America and Citibank hold more investments than they have cash on hand to cover. That means that if those assets lose their value, the banks can't recover on their own. And when a bank's failure means the failure of the American economy, the taxpayers are forced to step in.

It's called "Too Big to Fail." It should be called "too risky for the American economy" and "too reckless to continue."

This is the practice that brought our economy to the brink once before. That's why I have a new, bipartisan plan to end Too Big to Fail, and break up Wall Street megabanks for good. My plan would require that banks carry enough capital to cover their own losses, or force them to downsize so that they are no longer a risk to the American economy.

This is a commonsense solution—but I need all of us to help. The petition I started to Congress says:

Give Wall Street megabanks a choice: Carry enough capital to cover your own losses, or downsize until you're no longer a threat to American taxpayers.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Sign your name today, and make sure members of Congress know that you're in favor of ending "Too Big to Fail."

Sincerely,

–Sherrod Brown, U.S. Senator

Shut down Guantanamo

Below is an email from Manuel de Lizarriturri, a MoveOn member who started a petition on the MoveOn website, where anyone can start their own online petition.

President Obama: Deliver on your campaign promise
and shut down Guantanamo.

Sign the Petition!

Dear MoveOn member,

President Obama promised during his campaign that one of his top priorities would be closing the prison at Guantanamo. The New York Times reported on April 25 that the treatment of detainees is inhumane. It's time for the president to deliver on his promise, and for Congress to allow him do so.

That's why I started a petition to the United States Congress and President Barack Obama, which says:

Mr. President, when detainees with no hope of release go on a permanent hunger strike and are force-fed through nasal tubes, America can no longer claim to be the worldwide champion of human rights. How can you sleep at night knowing you have reneged on your campaign promise? Please close the Guantanamo Bay prison now!

Thanks!

Start a petition?

Dear MoveOn member,

These days, it's easy to sit back and complain that Washington is broken. But we all know that complaining won't change anything. If you want action, you gotta get organized and speak out.

That's why MoveOn built an open petition website where you can make your voice heard by starting your very own online petition—to the mayor of your town, the governor, Congress, or even the president of the United States. It's is super easy to start a petition, and we'll even help by sending the most popular petitions to other MoveOn members.

So what's the issue that's really bugging you? Don't just complain about it—start a petition. Maybe it's a big corporation in your area that's up to no good. Or an important piece of legislation that's languishing for lack of public attention. Click below to get started:

Click here to start your petition.

Thanks!

–Steven, Elena, Manny, Rosy, Bobby, Stefanie, and the rest of the team

P.S. If you get 20 signatures on your petition, we'll email it to at least 1,000 people in your area to help it grow (assuming of course that it's consistent with MoveOn's progressive values).
