TPP: the worst trade deal you've never heard of

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Republicans in Congress want to work with the Obama administration to fast-track the passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).1

The TPP is the largest—and worst—trade deal you've never heard of, having been devised in secret by representatives of some of the world's largest corporations.2

It's so big and has the potential to do so much damage, it's been likened to "NAFTA on steroids."3 Watch this short video to see what I mean:

Will you help spread the word about fast track and the TPP by watching and sharing the video right now?

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

P.S. Once you've watched the video, please join the growing chorus of Americans who are saying no to fast track and the TPP by adding your name to this petition from Larry Cohen, president of the Communication Workers of America.

Yes, Warren can win

No one speaks to the problems of income inequality and Wall Street corruption like Elizabeth Warren does.
Dear MoveOn member,

Why do we want Elizabeth Warren to run for president? Here are a few reasons:

  • Because no one else speaks to the problems of income inequality and Wall Street corruption like she does.
  • Because she's a fighter who's not afraid to take on the biggest corporate bullies.
  • Because she understands from firsthand experience what middle-class families are facing today.

Bottom line: We want Elizabeth Warren to run because America needs to hear Elizabeth Warren's message—and the best way for that to happen is for her to run for president.

But here's the rub: She hadn't planned on running, and it's up to us to show her that America is ready for Warren.

So we're aiming to raise enough money to launch a serious public opinion operation, compete with focus groups and tracking polls, to show she can win in the early primary states. Will you chip in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in to help show that America is ready for Warren.

We've already seen evidence that if Senator Warren runs, she can win. A focus group conducted by the respected pollster Peter Hart found that she was the most well liked of all the potential candidates for president—Republican or Democrat.1

Another pollster wrote in the Wall Street Journal that he's seen polling that shows Warren is just nine points behind in the crucial early primary state of New Hampshire—despite the fact that she hasn't campaigned even one day.2

MoveOn is laying the groundwork of the campaign Senator Warren needs to win. We've opened campaign offices in Iowa, where organizers are recruiting volunteer leaders and introducing her to voters who don't know her yet.

But the clock is ticking—we need to show Senator Warren that she can win. And part of this effort is demonstrating to other Democratic leaders, key endorsers, op-ed boards, and political journalists that Sen. Warren can be a real contender—before they write her out of this year's story.

That's why we're asking you, our members, to chip in to help us conduct the polling and public opinion research we need to show Senator Warren, the media, and potential donors that if she runs, she can win. Will you chip in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in to help show that America is ready for Warren.

Thanks for all you do.

"It's handled."

In fictional Washington, D.C., if you've got a problem there's only one person to call: Olivia Pope. In the real Washington, D.C., her name is Elizabeth Warren.
Run Warren Run

Dear MoveOn member,

Do you watch the T.V. show Scandal?

In fictional Washington, D.C., if you've got a problem there's only one person to call: Olivia Pope. She and her team of "gladiators" captivate the audience of ABC's hit show as they "handle" whatever problems come their way.

Olivia Pope's television antics may seem far fetched, but in real life there actually is someone taking on the biggest issues in Washington—her name is Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Scandal returns to the airwaves tonight so, before it comes on, will you check out this fun list of ways Elizabeth Warren is our real life gladiator and and then share it with your friends?

Let's make sure all the Scandal fans watching tonight's episode know to tune into the Run Warren Run campaign too.

Elizabeth Warren is our gladiator in a suit

Thanks for all you do.

VIDEO: Even the kids are cheering...

Check out the progress we've made with the Run Warren Run campaign--and then share this video today so more people know about our growing momentum.
Run Warren Run

Dear MoveOn member,

Every week, our campaign to urge Elizabeth Warren to run for president gains steam. We launched with an event in Des Moines where the president of the Iowa State Senate called for courageous people like Senator Warren to jump in the race. We brought the excitement to D.C., and left a gathering of some of the country's top political campaigners and activists buzzing about our campaign.

Then, to start the new year right, we kicked off with a packed rally in New Hampshire—home of the country's first presidential primary. And this weekend, we'll gather for more than 200 house parties—taking our excitement to nearly every state in the nation.

But after nearly two months of building support for Senator Warren to run for president, what's the best part of it all? Watching the kids chant, "Run Warren Run!"

Take a brief look back at what we've accomplished together—and then sign up to attend a house party this weekend:

Run Warren Run gaining momentum

Thanks for all you do.

Koch brothers shocker

Breaking news: The Koch brothers have announced plans to spend $889 million to buy the White House in 2016.
Dear MoveOn member,

Brace yourself: The Koch brothers just announced that they plan to spend $889 million on the 2016 election.1

That's right—just shy of a billion dollars. Nearly double the budget of the entire Romney campaign in 2012.2

At that level, it's not about buying a law or a politician. It's about buying our whole damn democracy.

Yeah. We're banging our heads against the wall, too.

But there's also some good news: We know how to fight back. It's political judo: turn your opponent's strength into a weakness. We're going to make Koch money toxic.

It's the strategy that helped us win the Michigan Senate race in 2014. Once voters know the Kochs' long history of outsourcing jobs, polluting the environment, driving down wages, and crushing local businesses, they become suspicious of the politicians bankrolled by the Koch political money machine.3

The Koch brothers are wasting no time—and we can't either. To stop the Koch brothers' takeover plan, we have to get started now. Will you chip in $3 to help fight back?

Yes, I'll chip in to help fight the Koch brothers.

As scary as the Koch plan might be, the story of what happened in Michigan is a huge source of hope.

During the 2014 campaign, Representative Gary Peters, the MoveOn-backed Michigan Senate candidate, was hit with a barrage of false Koch attack ads.

But the Peters campaign responded by going on offense—calling out the Koch brothers for shutting down a Michigan factory and laying off hundreds of workers after buying out the local owners.4

And it worked. Voters began to associate Rep. Peters' opponent with the destructive corporate practices of Koch Industries, and he was one of the few Democrats to win in 2014.

The lesson? The Koch brothers may be rich, but they have an Achilles heel: their own ugly business practices.

Let's make sure every voter in America knows just who they are and what they stand for:

Click here to chip in $3 to help fight the Koch brothers.

This won't happen by itself. Even after all of the press coverage in the last few years, too many Americans still don't even know who the Koch brothers are.5

That's why, even though the election still seems far away, it's time to start calling attention to the Koch brothers' most notorious business practices—and their blatant attempts to buy our democracy. Later, when the election really gets going, we'll watchdog Koch ads for accuracy and hypocrisy.

We don't have to outspend the Koch brothers to make this strategy work. Which is a good thing, because they'll always have more money than we do. But we do need enough resources to get moving. Will you chip in $3 to help make it happen?

Yes, I'll chip in to help fight the Koch brothers.

Thanks for all you do.

Elizabeth Warren is standing up to Big Pharma and needs our help

Senator Warren is gearing up for another major fight, this time against Big Pharma
Hi there—In the coming days, Senator Warren is expected to introduce a bill that will stand up to pharmaceutical lobbyists and hold their companies accountable for their illegal acts. We need to show our senators that we support Senator Warren's bill and to call on them to sign on as co-sponsors. Can you sign my petition right now, so that we can send the Senate a clear message?—Mark

Dear MoveOn member,

Senator Elizabeth Warren is taking a stand against illegal acts that are being committed by major pharmaceutical companies, and she needs our help. Will you add your name to this petition to the United States Senate? It says:

We are calling on you, U.S. senators, to stand up to pharmaceutical industry lobbyists and cosponsor the Medical Innovation Act, which would fight back against the illegal practices of major pharmaceutical companies.

Senator Warren is poised to introduce the Medical Innovation Act, a bill that would essentially act as a swear jar: whenever a huge drug company that is generating enormous profits as a result of federal research investments gets caught breaking the law, it has to put some money in the jar to fund the next generation of medical research.

In previewing the bill, she explained that pharmaceutical companies deserve some of the credit for life-saving drugs, but the government deserves some too. The same drugs that generate billions of dollars in profit for these companies don't just come overnight. "Drug companies make great contributions, but so do taxpayers. In other words, we built those medical innovations together," as she put it.1

Will you sign this petition and tell the senators of the 114th Congress of the United States that we need them to cosponsor the Medical Innovation Act and to fight back against Big Pharma?

Yes, add my name to this petition!

Thanks for all you do.

I'm ready to review your petition and look forward to adding your victory to the ever-growing list of progressive causes that MoveOn members across the country have championed. I'm just waiting on you. Will you start your petition now, and take the first step?

Yes, I'll Start a Petition
Dear MoveOn member,

You probably didn't recognize my name in your inbox—which is fair because it's probably never been there before. I tend to take on more of a "man behind the curtain" role on the MoveOn Petitions team. In fact there's usually only one way to get an email from me: start a petition.

Hundreds of progressive petition campaigns pop up on our platform every week. Their goals range from fighting for local school board initiatives to taking on Congress, and all of them have a common denominator: They're led by MoveOn members like you!

So what actually happens once you click "Submit" on your petition? Here's a behind-the-scenes look at what I do once you click submit on your petition.

I always tell people that I have the best job in the world, because I do. All day long I get to work to help you make your petition campaigns succeed. There are all kinds of ways that we offer you support to help turn your petition into a full-on campaign for change.

I jump into action as soon as your petition hits just 20 signatures. That's when your petition gets put into our state-of-the-art testing system. From there, I go through each petition by hand—well, by mouse—and find the perfect set of MoveOn members to share your petition with, helping to supplement your own efforts to gather signatures.

As your petition grows, you'll start to see my name in your inbox some more as you receive emails from my teammates and me, giving you step-by-step insider guides to running a successful campaign, based on MoveOn's 16 years of experience.

You'll also be invited to training calls that will allow you to communicate directly with some of our most seasoned campaign staff. And finally when you've utilized our tools and support, we will even help pay for you to print your petition, so that you can deliver the voices of your signers directly to your targets.

Nothing makes me happier than when MoveOn members claim victory. There's honestly just no better feeling than seeing that you were able to help someone create change in a meaningful way. I keep a special folder of images sent to me by MoveOn members, like the one below of student leaders in Jefferson County, Colorado who fought for their access to an uncensored American history education.

I'm ready to review your petition and look forward to getting pictures of your petition delivery soon, and adding your victory to the ever-growing list of progressive causes that MoveOn members across the country have championed. I'm just waiting on you. Will you start your petition now, and take the first step?

Thanks for all you do.

FW: Elizabeth Warren under attack

No wonder the Chamber is lashing out! This is our moment to fight back, debunk these attacks, defend Warren, and spread her message. Will you pitch in?
Hi there—I just wanted to make sure you saw Vicki's email from the other day.
Dear MoveOn member,

The head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce just came out swinging against Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Why does this matter? Because the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a front group for mega-corporations like Walmart. It tried to kill health care reform. It spent $33 million campaigning against Democrats in the last election.1 And it's doing everything it can to give corporations even more control over our government.

And why have they set their sights on Sen. Warren? Because Big Business sees that she's an effective leader who's calling for a different kind of economy.

Warren just led a successful effort to prevent a Wall Street insider from taking an important spot at the U.S. Treasury.2 And political commentators—from John Nichols to David Frum—are talking about the impact she is already having, and how that impact could increase with a presidential campaign.3

Big Business sees Sen. Warren as a huge threat—which means her message is winning! Now it's time to double down. Will you chip in $3 to fight back? We'll debunk the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's misleading attacks and spread Warren's message far and wide.

Yes, I'll chip in to help MoveOn fight for Elizabeth Warren!

The Chamber's head, Tom Donahue, claimed Warren's fight for working families and the middle class amounts to supporting "unbridled growth of the central government and a state-run economy." He also condescendingly (and with thinly-veiled sexism) referred to Sen. Warren as "a very pleasant woman" and went on to attack the possibility of her running for president, saying, "I don't think the American people will share her views either."4

With your help, we'll fight back—by standing with Warren in the fights coming up in the Senate, elevating her message and leadership even more through our effort to encourage her to run for president, and with polling that demonstrates Warren's ideas are exactly what this country hungers for.

Will you pitch in to fight back against the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's misleading attacks?

Yes, I'll chip in $3!

It's not just political insiders who are taking notice of Warren—which is one big reason that Big Business is terrified.

In a huge shock to the political establishment, half of the participants in a recent focus group of independent voters "said they would like to have Warren over to their house to talk, more than any other possible 2016 presidential contender they were asked about.5

They also said that "she was 'down to earth' and 'knowledgeable.' When asked a separate question about which politician they would like to have live next door, they picked Warren over every other contender as well."6

No wonder the Chamber is lashing out! This is our moment to fight back, debunk these attacks, defend Warren, and spread her message. Will you pitch in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in to fight these vicious attacks, amplify Warren's message, and urge her to run for president.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has a vision of this country that's 180 degrees different from our own—one with no regulations, where corporations are people, where the rich get to make the rules, where everyone else is left to fend for themselves, and where independent voters vote for the Tea Party instead of their own economic self-interest. The Chamber is lashing out because Warren threatens that vision.

But we have something the Chamber doesn't: people power. Let's use it. Let's call out these outrageous attacks. Let's join Elizabeth Warren's fights in the Senate with millions of voices. Let's continue the drumbeat calling for her to run for president, so that her bold vision and message are brought to the broadest possible audience. And let's invest in the polling that demonstrates to everyone that it's Warren's vision—not Tom Donahue's—that voters are hungry for.

Will you pitch in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in to fight these attacks, amplify Sen. Warren's message, and urge her to run for president.

Big Business is sending its attack dogs after Elizabeth Warren because she's an effective, progressive, and compelling leader. And that's the same reason that we need to fight back.

Thanks for all you do.

–Victoria, Jo, Ben O., Justin K., and the rest of the team

P.S. We'll send Tom Donahue an email letting him know every time his comments have inspired a donation to this campaign.

Pitch in $3 now, and we'll let Tom Donahue know!

Put Inwood on the map for Sen. Warren

Next weekend, Run Warren Run is launching at house parties all across the country. Can you host a party and put your town on the map?
Run Warren Run
Run Warren Run is launching at house parties all across the country. Is your town on the map?

Next weekend, supporters across the country will gather at Run Warren Run house parties, in the next stage of this grassroots campaign to encourage Sen. Warren to enter the presidential race, and we need all hands on deck to pull this off. We still need someone to host a party in Inwood. Can you step up and share Sen. Warren's story with your hometown?

Yes, I'll Host a House Party!

Dear MoveOn member,

We're just one week away from one of the most action-packed weekends of 2015. And I'm not talking about Super Bowl Sunday.

Next weekend, MoveOn members and our friends at Democracy for America and Ready for Warren will be hosting Run Warren Run house parties in cities large and small, to kick off the next stage of this inspiring grassroots campaign.

Already, more than 150 gatherings are being planned to introduce Run Warren Run to their neighborhoods and to demonstrate to Senator Elizabeth Warren that she has the broad support she needs to run for president and win. We're getting close to holding house parties in every state in America.

If we can pull this off, it'll show everyone—including the media, which have been closely tracking this effort—that the movement to draft Sen. Warren has growing support all across the country.

To go big, we still need someone to host a party in Inwood. Can you sign up now to bring Run Warren Run to your hometown?

Yes, I'll put Inwood on the map and sign up to host a Run Warren Run house party January 31 or February 1.

These house parties are a great opportunity to meet your neighbors, spend time with old friends and colleagues, share snacks, and get loud and excited about what would be possible in our country with Sen. Warren as president—whether or not the game is on in the background.

Hosting a Run Warren Run house party is easy and fun. We'll set you up for success by sending you a step-by-step guide, prepared by our national organizers, on how to host a great party. Plus, we have a team of amazing volunteers on standby who'll work with you one-on-one to make sure you have everything you need for your event.

If we're going to build a grassroots army strong enough to stand with Sen. Warren and take on Wall Street all the way to the White House, we need to get active and talk to our neighbors in every city, county, and state around the country.

There's just one catch: We still need a volunteer in Inwood to kick off the Run Warren Run campaign there. Are you in?

Yes, I'll sign up to host a house party next weekend.

Thanks for all you do.

Time to thank Sen. Gillibrand!

Everyone who's been fighting for diplomacy has a big reason to celebrate!

Time to thank Sen. Gillibrand. Can you call her right now? Here's what you can say:

"Thank you for standing with President Obama by opposing the Menendez-Kirk legislation. Any new sanctions would violate the interim nuclear deal, push Iran away from the negotiating table, and could put our nation on the path to war with Iran."

Here's where to call:

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

Report Your Call!
Dear MoveOn member,

Everyone who's been fighting for a diplomatic approach to resolving our nation's long-term stand-off with Iran over its nuclear program just got a big reason to celebrate.

We just got news that Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has spoken out in favor of letting diplomacy with Iran take its course.

Sen. Gillibrand said that she wasn't interested in disrupting negotiations with Iran by rushing a vote on the Menendez-Kirk legislation—legislation which amounts to a renewed push for anti-diplomacy sanctions which MoveOn members fought and helped prevent last year.1

This is great news! MoveOn members have been making calls to Sen. Gillibrand asking her to stand with President Obama and let diplomacy with Iran work.

And she listened. Sen. Gillibrand's standing with President Obama. Now it's our time to stand with her. Can you call to thank her right now?

Worst decision in American history?

After years of organizing, Citizens United is on the ropes. We always knew this would be a long term fight. Slowly but surely, we're winning. But it's up to us to keep pushing.
Dear MoveOn member,

Five years ago this week, the Supreme Court handed down one of the worst decisions in American history: Citizens United.

But here's the good news: After years of organizing, Citizens United is on the ropes.

Last year, 55 U.S. Senators came out for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. More than 600 cities and 16 states have gone on record in favor of amending the Constitution.1

And most important of all, 80% of Americans oppose Citizens United—even including 72 percent of Republicans!2

We always knew this would be a long-term fight. Slowly but surely, we're winning—but it's up to us to keep pushing. Can you chip in $3 to help keep up the fight?

Yes, I'll chip in to help overturn Citizens United and get big money out of politics.

To keep up the pressure to overturn this terrible decision, we joined together with a massive coalition to turn this week's anniversary into one of the biggest days of action against money in politics ever.

Our coalition has organized hundreds of protests, rallies, and teach-ins all over the country. We're all over social media. And in Washington, D.C., we delivered over 5 million petition signatures demanding a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.

But to help keep up the fight long-term—we're asking every MoveOn member to make a special fifth anniversary donation to help overturn Citizens United. Will you chip in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in help overturn Citizens United and get big money out of politics.

Thanks for all you do.

Elizabeth Warren (let's go!)

We hired staff, opened a field office, and packed the House in Des Moines, and did it again Saturday in New Hampshire.
Run Warren Run! When we asked MoveOn members if we should encourage Elizabeth Warren to run for President... 81.3% said YES! We hired staff and opened a field office in Iowa... We packed the house at a Run Warren Run event in Des moines. And then we did it again, this Saturday in New Hampshire. Time and again, Senator Warren has stood up for us. Your contribution helps us show we stand with her. Click here chip in.

Our priorities

Dear MoveOn member,

Tonight, we'll hear from President Obama. But just as important: We have already heard from you.

Tens of thousands of MoveOn members—from small towns and big cities across all 50 states—took time to participate in the MoveOn Member Priorities Survey. You shared your vision for America, and how you'd like to see MoveOn direct energy and resources in pursuing that vision.

Of course, we're already investing deeply in Run Warren Run, an ambitious campaign to urge Elizabeth Warren to run for president—elevating her vision for economic opportunity along the way. But that's not all we're going to accomplish together this year.

So, what did we learn from the survey?
  • Getting money out of politics, fighting for a fair economy, strengthening Social Security, combating the climate crisis, and defending Obamacare are the issues that MoveOn members most want to take action on in 2015.

  • In the coming year, MoveOn members want to focus on efforts that push President Obama and Democrats to stand strong for core values and not to back down in the face of conservative attacks.

  • MoveOn members are passionate, committed, and ready to work—but we already knew that.
If you are ready to invest in campaigning on these priorities in the year ahead, can you chip in $3 now?

Yes, I'll chip in.

All of these are critical issues—and the political climate makes our work even more important. But to be clear: We're not just rolling up our sleeves to jump into these fights—we're already in the heart of them.

Last week, MoveOn members joined rallies calling on the president to reject the Keystone XL pipeline. This week, members are part of a push to collect five million signatures calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Next week, members will host hundreds of Run Warren Run house parties to urge Elizabeth Warren—a loud, proud champion for a fairer economy—to bring her clear vision and effective leadership to the presidential race.

All along the way, and in the months ahead, we'll be pushing President Obama and Democrats to stand strong as we fight for the priorities of MoveOn members across America.

Help fund the fight—chip in $3 now.

Yes, count me in for the fights ahead!

We've seen some real progress over the past six years of the Obama Administration, and we've also seen areas where we've been frustrated by inaction. Tonight's speech will tell us what the president's priorities are for the next year—but we already know our priorities. And while we measure his State of the Union address against the issues that matter most to us, let us also measure our own commitment to being part of the solution by fighting—with our votes, voices, and wallets—for the priorities we hold dear.

Are you ready to pitch in $3 to fight the good fight?

Yes, I'm in.

Thanks for all you do.

Senate Democrats: Let diplomacy with Iran work

The U.S. Senate is poised to take up dangerous new legislation that could sabotage diplomacy with Iran. Can you make a call today?

We're calling key Senate Democrats to say: Make sure the Senate lets diplomacy with Iran work!

Can you call Sen. Gillibrand? Tell her:

"Please oppose the Menendez-Kirk legislation. The Senate must not be allowed to undermine President Obama's diplomacy with Iran. Any new sanctions would violate the interim nuclear deal, push Iran away from the negotiating table, and put our nation on the path to war with Iran."

Here's where to call:

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

Report Your Call!
Dear MoveOn member,

The U.S. Senate is poised to take up dangerous new legislation that could sabotage President Obama's diplomacy with Iran.

Introduced by Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL), this legislation is a renewed push for the very same reckless, right-wing proposals and anti-diplomacy sanctions that MoveOn members fought and helped prevent last year.

This bad bill could go through—despite President Obama's promised veto—but only if enough Democrats support it. That's why we need to make sure key Senate Democrats hear our opposition now—before the legislation gains any more traction.

Can you call Senator Kirsten Gillibrand right now?

During a press briefing from Vienna, where the most recent talks were held, Secretary Kerry gave an impassioned plea for the international community to let diplomacy work, lifting up the significant progress made on painstaking efforts to date.1

The pending agreement has the potential to stand as a powerful example of an important U.S. foreign policy milestone—demonstrating the power of tough, principled diplomacy in lieu of a rush to use military force. An issue that's this important to all of our collective security is worth taking the time to get right.

Yet even as negotiators return to work, a small group of Democrats is poised to join reckless war hawks like Senator John McCain to undermine President Obama's diplomatic efforts, and their recklessness could put our nation on the path to war.

Every single call is important. With Republicans in control of the Senate, we'll have to fight twice as hard to win this year.

Thanks for all you do.
