Terrible news on Keystone

President Obama has indicated he'll veto the Keystone XL pipeline if Republicans rush it to his desk. But he'll need to veto much more than that.
Dear MoveOn member,

Terrible news: The House has approved the Keystone pipeline. The Republicans, who just took control of the Senate, have made clear that this is a top priority—and they have the votes to send the bill to President Obama's desk.1

My first impulse when I heard this news was to choke back a bit of profanity. (I have little kids in the house, and they pick up everything.) Dang it!

Luckily, there's good news: The president has vowed to veto this bill.

But this won't be the last time President Obama is the last line of defense against the new Republican Congress. And every time he acts, he'll pay for it—taking heat from conservatives and the media.

So we're running a big campaign to show President Obama we'll have his back when he stands up to the worst of the coming right-wing attacks.

For every donation to our campaign, we'll send the president a veto pen. He'll need plenty. Will you contribute $3 to this effort?

Yes, I'll chip in to send President Obama a veto pen—and to support the campaign to encourage him to use it!

Over the next two years, it's critical that President Obama resist terrible conservative policies—and stop them from becoming law.

But that won't be easy. Again and again, he'll feel pressure to buckle—from the media, from corporate interests, and even from some of his advisers and conservative Democrats. With that much inside-the-Beltway pressure, it won't always be easy for President Obama to draw the line.

That's where our campaign comes in. First, we'll keep pressure on Senate Democrats to stop bad legislation from reaching President Obama's desk. But if it does, we'll encourage the president to use his veto pen.

To ensure President Obama has the support he needs to do the right thing, we'll help educate the president, the public, and the media about the cost of these right-wing policies. We'll collect real-life stories of folks who would be hurt by Republicans—and then tell these stories in the media, through ads, and at in-person events. And we'll make sure Democratic lawmakers—and the president—hear from regular Americans on the phone, at the White House, on Capitol Hill, and in district offices.

We'll send our message loud and clear: "President Obama, Americans need you to stand with us and use your constitutional authority to veto bad policies—and when you do, we'll get your back."

Can you send the president this message—and a veto pen—and help fund this campaign?

Yes, I'll chip in $3.

Our friends at Bold Nebraska—who've been a major force of opposition against the Keystone pipeline—have sent the president veto pens and urged him to veto the pipeline. We've got their back. But the president isn't just going to need to veto the pipeline—he may need to veto bills that would defund health care, take away workers' rights, and let banks run wild. So he needs lots and lots of pens to drive the point home!

Will you send the president a veto pen—and support our campaign to make sure President Obama stands up to Republicans?

Yes, I'll chip in $3—and send the president a veto pen.

As the president shows courage in preparing to veto this one piece of legislation, he needs to know that we stand with him as he stands strong—and that we expect him to use his veto power when the situation demands it.

Can you chip in $3 to this campaign—and help make sure the president is ready to veto the worst right-wing ideas?

Yes, I'll chip in.

Thanks for all you do.

Anna, Jo, Josh, Corinne, and the rest of the team

P.S. Delivering thousands of veto pens to the White House will help bring attention to our cause and get the media to cover this story for just a few cents per pen—but don't worry, we won't waste the pens! (We'll donate them to a local school after our delivery event.)

Will you support our campaign to make sure President Obama stands up to Republicans?

Yes, I'll chip in $3.
