Add your name: Stop illegal gun sales

President Obama is considering cracking down on illegal gun sales. Sign the petition to tell him to act now and not wait for Congress.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm a conservative gun owner in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and I'm just heartsick about the nonstop school shootings across our country—a horrific 153 incidents since the Sandy Hook massacre.1 That's why I'm teaming up with MoveOn to call on President Obama to take immediate executive action to close a gaping loophole in our gun laws. Please click here to sign my petition urging President Obama to stop illegal gun sales.

Close the loophole that allows criminals to buy guns without background checks from unlicensed, high-volume gun sellers at gun shows, over the Internet, and elsewhere. Don't wait on Congress. Act now to curb the epidemic of daily gun violence and mass shootings.

Since the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, there have been eight more school shootings.2

Each year, countless numbers of guns are sold by unlicensed, high-volume sellers through Internet websites and at gun shows. Nearly a quarter of a million gun sales originate from one single website.3 Unlicensed sellers at gun shows often lure buyers by openly advertising guns for sale with prominent signage saying, "no paperwork necessary."4

President Obama is considering closing this background check loophole—which could be game-changing in keeping guns away from people who shouldn't have them.5

But the NRA is fighting back with inflammatory lies about the president's plan—even promoting a blog threatening "civil war" if the president moves forward.6

Enough is enough. I'm standing with the president to help give him the support he needs to act. Will you please join me?

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Mark Carman

Add your name: Arrest Deputy Ben Fields

Arrest Deputy Fields and charge him with assault! Tell Richland County to stop using police to solve simple discipline matters.
Dear MoveOn member,

Earlier this week, Deputy Ben Fields of the Richland County Police Department body slammed a teenage girl in front of her classmates for refusing to leave class, while classmates looked on in horror and the teacher did nothing.1 Can you join us in calling to charge Deputy Ben Fields with assault? Click here to sign the petition, which says:

Arrest Deputy Ben Fields and charge him with assault! Stop using police to solve simple discipline matters. We demand community control over police.

We must stop the school-to-prison pipeline by ending the use of police to solve normal childhood behavioral issues, such as being defiant in class.

Criminalizing the behavior of Black students in school does not help them or the school. This is not just about a bad apple, but a bad way of thinking about an entire segment of our society.

Can you join us in standing up against police violence and demand that Deputy Ben Fields be arrested and charged with assault?

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Invitation: Join Gun Owners for Gun Control delegation to Washington, D.C.

This could be the breakthrough we need in the fight to end senseless gun violence.
Dear MoveOn member,

Thank you for stepping up as one of more than 31,000 gun-owning MoveOn members who support commonsense gun control.

With President Obama considering executive action to close a major background check loophole, MoveOn is organizing a Gun Owners for Gun Control delegation to Washington, D.C., in mid-November to help generate much-needed public support.1 Apply now to be part of a fully funded Gun Owners for Gun Control delegation!

Here's some background: The president has the authority to ask for a revision of the current definition of what it means to be "engaged in the business" of "dealing in firearms."2 The ambiguity surrounding this definition allows high-volume gun sellers—many of whom operate at gun shows or sell their guns online—to operate without conducting basic background checks.3

But the National Rifle Association (NRA) is fighting back, viciously targeting gun safety advocates.4 Gun owners have the best chance of breaking what Senator Dick Durbin referred to as the NRA's "death grip" on lawmakers—to prevent it from sabotaging the president's game-changing efforts.5

That's why gun-owning MoveOn members will personally deliver critical messages to the president, Congress, and the media: Gun owners support President Obama's bold action and are ready to defend it.

Will you apply today to join a delegation of MoveOn gun owners bound for Washington, D.C., in mid-November?

Because timing is tight, you have only until midnight on October 28 to apply. The delegation will be in Washington for two days.

After the tragedy at Umpqua Community College—now the 153rd school shooting since Sandy Hook—President Obama singled out responsible gun owners in his address to the nation, asking them whether the NRA represents their interests.6, 7

More than 31,000 MoveOn members responded to a MoveOn survey asking a similar question and prompting the launch of Gun Owners for Gun Control, a MoveOn campaign to end senseless gun violence by mobilizing and amplifying the voices and actions of responsible gun owners.

Let's put the NRA on notice by making sure your critically important voice reaches key pundits and policy makers in our nation's capitol, paving the way for President Obama's executive action in the short term and more-extensive congressional legislation in the days ahead.

Click here now if you're interested in participating in a delegation of gun-owning MoveOn members, headed to Washington, D.C.

Thanks for all you do.

–Jo, Brian, Emily, Nick, and the rest of the team

P.S. If you're selected to go on the delegation, MoveOn will pay the full cost of your travel and lodging. Please click here now to apply!

Should MoveOn support this petition?

Dear MoveOn member,

A MoveOn member named Donna OKelley recently created a petition on our public petition website entitled "San Diego SeaWorld: Stop Breeding Orcas"—and we'd like to know what you think of it.

The petition is addressed to Joel Manby, CEO of SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment, and reads:

Tell SeaWorld to stop their captive breeding program.

Sign Donna's petition.

Here's what Donna wrote about it:

The California Coastal Commission recently decided that San Diego SeaWorld must halt the breeding of all captive orcas.

But SeaWorld says it wants to continue breeding orcas in captivity and will challenge the commission's ruling. Tell SeaWorld to accept the CCC's decision and end their orca breeding program once and for all.

Can you click to let us know what you think?

I want to sign this petition.

I don't think MoveOn should support this petition.

We'll decide whether to send this petition out to additional MoveOn members in your area based on your feedback.

In case you haven't heard about it, MoveOn's petition site allows anyone to start an online petition and share it with friends and neighbors to build support for their cause.

Thanks for all you do.

Have an idea for a petition?

Do you have an idea for a petition? Help change the world and start your own MoveOn petition today.

Dear MoveOn member,

Ever heard Margaret Mead's famous saying? "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

That's the story of MoveOn. In 1998, when a Republican Congress was focusing all its efforts on impeaching President Clinton, two people with no political experience started a simple online petition: "Censure President Clinton and Move On to Pressing Issues Facing the Nation."

They shared their petition with their friends, and within days they had hundreds of thousands of signatures. Today, MoveOn has over 8 million members—mostly folks who got involved by signing an online petition, and have stayed active in helping to fight for a progressive America.

That's why we launched MoveOn Petitions where you can start your own online petition and invite your friends to sign it. We'll send the most popular petitions to other MoveOn members to help build support for your cause.

It's easy to get started—just click here.

Thanks!

A personal plea

The president has said he wants to implement federal-level reform in the criminal justice system during his last days in office. Hearing from you can help move him to action.
President Obama: Sign an executive order prohibiting asking about an applicant's prior convictions.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm John Legend, Grammy award-winning musician and MoveOn member, and I started a petition to President Barack Obama, which says:

I am writing to urge you to issue an executive order implementing a "Ban the Box" policy—prohibiting asking about an applicant's prior convictions—for all federal government employers and contractors. "Ban the Box" is already on the books in 19 states.

All citizens will benefit when people with past convictions are no longer shut out of jobs and can financially support their families and contribute to the economy. Though this policy has support in many states, it is critical to push for all employers to "Ban the Box." I urge you to set the tone by implementing this essential reform at the federal level. "Ban the Box" and remove unfair barriers to reentry immediately.

Currently, 19 states have passed laws or enacted policy to provide a fair chance at employment for formerly incarcerated job seekers, but it's not enough. That's why I'm working with ColorOfChange.org and MoveOn through my #FREEAMERICA campaign to move forward this important issue.

Prohibiting federal government employers from asking about an applicant's prior convictions is a direct way to address the destructive discrimination that formerly convicted job seekers face. "Ban the Box" policies still allow a criminal background check for qualified applicants later in the hiring process.

Join me in asking the president to "Ban the Box!"

An executive order would require employers to evaluate applicants with an arrest or conviction record on an individual basis. These reforms are critical to reducing the Black unemployment rate, strengthening our economy, and meeting the goal of significantly reducing recidivism and prison overcrowding over the long term.

The president has said he wants to implement federal-level reform in the criminal justice system during his last days in office. Hearing from you can help move him to action.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–John Legend

I'm a gun-owning evangelical Christian Republican

I'm a gun-owning evangelical Christian Republican. I campaigned against President Obama two times. But after the Oregon shooting, I agree with him: we need responsible gun legislation in America.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm a gun-owning evangelical Christian Republican. I campaigned against President Obama two times. But after the Oregon shooting, I agree with him: we need responsible gun legislation in America.

That's why I've decided to team up with MoveOn. And boy, I didn't see that coming. But I believe MoveOn has the guts and grit it's going to take to reach and mobilize responsible gun owners across the political spectrum, including more than 30,000 MoveOn members, to rally support for executive actions by President Obama that could reduce gun-related tragedies.

I put my money down only on sure bets. And I've got my money on MoveOn. Will you join me by chipping in $5 a month?

Click here to make a monthly donation and help pass sensible, urgently needed laws regulating guns.

MoveOn and I will call on responsible gun owners—some of whom are also NRA members, like my brother who's paid NRA dues for forty years—to stand up to the NRA and stand up for responsible gun legislation.

To create the political pressure we need to win, I'm ready to go all-in for the long haul. To get started, I'll head to Washington with other gun owners. We'll ask to meet with members of Congress and White House staff. MoveOn members and I will deliver one million petition signatures, make thousands of calls, and make sure politicians of both parties hear us loud and clear.

Responsible gun ownership is just plain old common sense, but too many people get stuck in the politics and lies of it. There's no time for that nonsense. I can't bear the thought of another shooting on my watch and I know responsible gun owners are key to stopping this madness.

Will you join me with a $5 a month donation? Your ongoing support will help fund a campaign for responsible gun legislation—led by responsible gun owners—that cuts across political ideology.

Yes, I'll become a monthly donor and help stand up to the NRA.

Right after the Oregon shooting, I watched the president's press conference. That man wasn't talking politics. He was talking as a father, terrified for his daughters.

And when the president called out responsible gun owners as the people he needed to hear from most, I realized he was speaking to folks like me—gun owners who hadn't yet spoken up for responsible gun legislation. And he was giving me a chance to make it right.

Lord knows, we may not be able to get our politicians in Congress to work together. But we can. We've just got to set our politics aside and do what's right for the safety of our children and the future of our country.

How I see it, we're all just trying to cross the same bridge, even if we're approaching it from different directions.

I'm making ending gun-related violence my life's mission, and I'm not stopping till we win. I know MoveOn won't either.

Please. Chip in $5 a month now.

Click here if you're ready to join the fight.

Thanks for all you do.

The MoveOn 2016 Presidential Forum

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm excited to share that MoveOn is hosting a 2016 Presidential Forum—with questions from MoveOn members like you, and answers from Democratic presidential candidates.

MoveOn has invited all of the Democratic candidates, and Senator Bernie Sanders is the first to confirm he's in.1

To pull this off well—and reach millions of people with substantive conversation about some of the most important issues we face—we need your help asking critical questions that matter to the American people.

Will you ask the Democratic candidates for president a question? Just follow our simple instructions for how to make a 30-second homemade video of you asking your question—and it could be selected for the MoveOn 2016 Presidential Forum and answered by the participating candidates!

Yes, I'll submit a question by video!

I'll submit a question—but not right now. Follow up with me later this week.

Here's how this will work:

  • We've invited every Democratic candidate—Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, Lincoln Chafee, and Lawrence Lessig. Already, Sen. Sanders has confirmed his participation.
  • You and other MoveOn members submit questions for the presidential candidates—and your story about why that question is important to you—via video. Click here to do that now. The deadline to submit your video question is Monday, October 26, at 11:59 p.m. local time.
  • You'll have an opportunity to weigh in on the questions you most want to hear the candidates answer.
  • We'll sit down with every candidate who participates in the MoveOn 2016 Presidential Forum, sharing the top questions, pressing them for thoughtful, detailed responses, and filming their answers.
  • We'll make a one-hour video special and stream it for the entire MoveOn community to watch and comment on together. And we'll post all the selected questions and answers online for the public to view.
This is the only online forum or debate scheduled so far—with the potential to reach millions of people on their phones and computers. And 100% of the questions are coming from the grassroots, not from media networks or political parties.

Click here to submit your question for the candidates now—using our easy-to-follow instructions for making a video on your computer or smartphone.

Fifteen million people tuned in to the first Democratic presidential debate—the most for any Democratic debate ever. That's nearly 50% more people than tuned in to the most-watched debate of the highly contested 2008 presidential primary.2

And more people streamed the Democratic debate online than streamed the earlier Republican debate on the same network.3

It's clear that the American people want to hear from the candidates. But we've got to do this ourselves. Right now, there are just three more Democratic debates before the first contest—the Iowa caucuses on February 1. And all three are on weekends (one is on a holiday weekend and one is the weekend before Christmas)—not exactly times when lots of Americans are thinking about politics.

As a Washington Post columnist wrote after the first debate, "Quite frankly, America could benefit from watching a wider variety of people asking a bigger range of questions, period."4

That's what the MoveOn community can deliver.

Will you make a 30-second video with your question for the candidates? (We'll show you how; it's easy.)

Yes, I'll submit a question now.

Instead of emails and name-calling, this race should be about expanding Social Security benefits so that our seniors can live with dignity and peace of mind, and ensuring students can graduate from college with zero debt. It should be about unleashing American investment and ingenuity to tackle climate change by keeping fossil fuels in the ground. It should be about confronting systemic racism and ending mass incarceration so that every community can thrive.

In July 2007, all eight Democratic candidates for president (including Clinton, Obama, Edwards, and Biden) participated in MoveOn's Virtual Town Hall, which focused heavily on the Iraq War, climate change, and health care. Months later, MoveOn members voted to endorse then-Senator Barack Obama, and 1 million members volunteered for the campaign. Today, our community is more than twice as large as it was then—meaning we can and must do more to change our country.

What's your question for the candidates?

Click here to submit your question now.

Or, click here to get a reminder to submit your question later this week. The deadline to submit your video question is Monday, October 26, at 11:59 p.m. local time.

Thanks for all you do.

Popcorn's bee-killing secret

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Larissa Walker from the Center for Food Safety, and I started a petition to the President and CEOs of Diamond Foods and Weaver Popcorn Company, which says:

I am very concerned about the use of neonicotinoid insecticides as a coating on seeds used to grow your company's popcorn products. As you may know, bees and other pollinators are suffering alarming population losses, and scientists consistently identify pesticides, specifically a group of insecticides called neonicotinoids, as a primary factor in poor pollinator health.

As leaders of two of the largest popcorn brands in the U.S., I urge you to commit to phasing out the use of neonicotinoid-coated corn seeds in your popcorn products. Your two companies can make a big difference by using their considerable purchasing power to work with seed distributors and growers to drastically reduce the harmful use of neonicotinoid seed coatings that endanger bees.

It's no secret we love popcorn. In fact, Americans consume 16 billion quarts of popcorn each year.1 But we're getting more than we bargained for in all those bowls of popcorn: bee-toxic pesticides.

Bees are dying at alarming rates, and scientists have identified a group of insecticides called neonicotinoids ("neonics") as a prime culprit in these drastic population losses. The largest single use of neonicotinoids is as a seed coating for field crops. In fact, researchers estimate that upwards of 90% of all field corn grown in the U.S. comes from seed coated with bee-toxic neonic chemicals.2

Unfortunately, the popcorn industry uses bee-killing chemicals on their seeds, too. That's why we're calling on Pop Secret and Pop Weaver, two of the biggest brands in the industry, to urge them to source their popcorn from seeds that are NOT coated in these harmful chemicals. Click here to add your name.

Neonics are the most widely used insecticides in the world, and are a class of systemic chemicals, meaning they are dispersed throughout the treated plant, rendering the whole plant toxic. Just as alarming, neonics can last in the environment for years and they can harm species that the chemical was not designed to kill—like bees, butterflies, birds, and entire food chains.

As two of the largest popcorn brands in the U.S., Pop Secret and Pop Weaver can make a big difference for bees by phasing out their use of neonic-coated seeds.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Larissa Walker

Don't let Murdoch meddle with National Geographic

Dear MoveOn member,

Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox recently bought a majority stake in National Geographic's media assets, including its iconic science magazine. That's bad news for anyone who cares about an independent and informative media.

Can you join me in calling for National Geographic to safeguard itself against Fox News's harmful influence? Click here to sign the petition, which says:

Institute an editorial independence policy—including the appointment of a Public Editor—to prevent ideological influence over National Geographic's scientific coverage by Rupert Murdoch or others.

A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists found 72% of Fox News's climate science coverage to be "misleading."1

Voters need accurate information about the world around us that's based on science, not ideology. For more than a century, National Geographic's nonprofit journalism has given us that, and Fox says this sale won't change anything—but we need a guarantee.

National Geographic must immediately adopt policies—including appointing a Public Editor—to ensure the magazine's editorial independence.

Sign the petition: STOP fracking on our public lands!

Our national forests are being destroyed by dangerous fracking. Tell Congress to put an end to this and ban fracking on public lands now!
Dear MoveOn member,

Right now, our national forests and public lands are open to dangerous fracking. But I think we shouldn't let the oil and gas industry destroy these treasured places for private profit.

Can you join me in calling on Congress to ban fracking on public lands? Click here to sign the petition, which says:

We must preserve our public lands for the long run in order to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, the health of our communities, and our precious climate.

I urge you to support and co-sponsor Rep. Mark Pocan's Protect Our Public Lands Act of 2015 (HR 1902).

Fracking has already caused serious damage to our public lands and precious climate. By the end of 2014, oil and gas companies had leases on over 34 million acres of public land, and over 200 million more acres are currently being targeted for drilling—even areas that surround America’s most precious National Parks and monuments.1

There is no amount of regulation that can make fracking safe. Regulated fracking still results in harm to people's health, accidental spills of toxic waste, air pollution, earthquakes, drinking water contamination, habitat destruction, and worsening climate change.

In addition, the Government Accountability Office reports that the majority of high-risk oil and gas wells drilled between 2009 and 2012 have never been inspected.2 Public lands, nearby communities and our planet are paying the price.

The only way to protect the health of our communities, the integrity of our land, and the future of our planet from the risks of fracking is to ban fracking altogether.

Sign the petition to ask your members of Congress to ban all fracking on federal lands and co-sponsor Rep. Mark Pocan's Protect Our Public Lands Act of 2015.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Concealed handguns don't belong on college campuses

Schools should be safe havens for learning and growth. Can you speak up and demand that concealed handguns are banned from college campuses?
More than 22,000 gun-owning MoveOn members have launched a campaign for commonsense gun control, and we're amplifying their voices on social media and elsewhere. But to go up against the National Rifle Association—and win—all of us need to speak up. That's why we're joining our friends at GunFreeKids.org to challenge the NRA and remove guns from school grounds.

California just banned concealed handguns on school campuses—a major step toward protecting young people from gun violence.1 Can you keep up the momentum and urge Congress to pass a law to make it more difficult to carry guns onto campuses? Click here to add your name.

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Andy Pelosi of GunFreeKids.org, and I started a petition to Congress and President Obama, which says:

Nine people died and another nine were injured on Thursday, October 1 after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Our nation̢۪s colleges, universities, and K-12 schools should be safe havens for learning and growth, where students, faculty, staff, and visitors need not worry about the threat of gun violence on their campuses. We call on our federal elected representatives to make it more difficult for people to carry concealed weapons on our campuses across the country. The answer to our gun violence problem is not the introduction of more weapons.

In response to the tragedy at Umpqua Community College and other places in our country, the extreme pro-gun movement continues to push their irrational and extremist agenda of promoting the carrying of loaded, concealed handguns on college campuses and K-12 schools as a solution to school shootings.

As a result, colleges in Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, Texas, and Wisconsin have now been forced in different ways to allow the carrying of firearms on their premises. Similarly, K-12 schools in several states are now being forced to allow staff (barely trained, non-law enforcement) to carry concealed weapons inside buildings.

The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses. These gun-free policies have helped to make our postsecondary-education institutions some of the safest places in the country.

Let's keep concealed handguns off our nation's campuses.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Andy Pelosi

No room for hate on Saturday Night Live

Donald Trump has been invited to host Saturday Night Live one year out from the November 2016 election. Will you join me in calling on NBCUniversal and "Saturday Night Live" to dump Trump?
Dear MoveOn member,

"Saturday Night Live" recently announced that Donald Trump would serve as host of the program on November 7, 2015, one year from the 2016 general election.1

The popular comedy show, which has been criticized for not adequately representing Latinos, is broadcast by NBC—the same network that terminated its relationship with Donald Trump over his derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants.2,3

Now, just three months after cutting ties with Donald Trump, NBC is seeking to boost its ratings at the expense of Latinos and immigrants by allowing Trump to host one of its most popular shows.

Will you join me in calling on NBCUniversal Chairman of Content Matt Bond and "Saturday Night Live" Producer Lorne Michaels to dump Trump?

Mass deportation is not funny! By allowing Donald Trump to host "Saturday Night Live," NBC is excusing and even validating Trump̢۪s hateful comments about immigrants and Latinos. Tell NBC to dump Donald Trump as host of "Saturday Night Live!"

By inviting Donald Trump to host "Saturday Night Live," NBC is demonstrating that it doesn’t care about its Latino and pro-immigrant viewers. It is providing a platform for Trump’s insulting attacks on immigrants and calling it entertainment—something we do not find funny.

It is shameful for NBC to allow Donald Trump to host "Saturday Night Live," a comedy show, when one of the main policies he has promised would rip apart millions of immigrant and Latino families.

NBC cannot bill hateful rhetoric as comedy, much less entertainment. Tell NBC to drop Donald Trump as host of "Saturday Night Live!"

Thanks!

Sign the petition: Shut down the Benghazi committee now

It's time to shut down the Select Committee on Benghazi once and for all.
Dear MoveOn member,

During the debate earlier this week, Senator Bernie Sanders said what a lot of us have been thinking: The American people are sick and tired of hearing about Hillary Clinton's "damn emails." It's past time that the Republicans stop using them as a political red herring and start talking about the real issues that actually impact Americans.

In a recent interview, Representative Kevin McCarthy told Sean Hannity that "everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping."1

Join me in telling House Republicans that it's time to shut down the Select Committee on Benghazi once and for all.

Representative Kevin McCarthy has dropped out of the race to become the next Speaker of the House on the heels of admitting to abusing congressional power for political gain with the Select Committee on Benghazi. Add your name and demand that House Republicans shut it down now.

The Select Committee on Benghazi has become one of the longest-running congressional task forces in history—longer than Watergate. It has cost American taxpayers $4.5 million.2 And according to Rep. McCarthy, it was a political stunt to affect the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

Furthermore, in the past few months, the Select Committee on Benghazi has decided to completely shift focus from its original purpose of identifying how America can do more to protect our diplomats abroad to parsing Secretary Clinton's email correspondence.3

Using taxpayer dollars to further a political agenda is unethical. But using taxpayer dollars to exploit a national tragedy that resulted in the loss of four American lives is utterly reprehensible.

Rep. McCarthy dropping out of the Speaker's race is not enough. Join us and demand that the House Republicans stop this charade and shut down the Select Committee on Benghazi now.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Representative Keith Ellison
