BREAKING: The next big fight begins

Republicans in the Senate (and only Republicans) just approved a budget that envisions a grotesque future: trillions of dollars in tax giveaways to the ultra wealthy, funded by cutting trillions from Medicaid, Medicare, and other vital programs for the poor and middle class.

Dear MoveOn member,

BREAKING: Republicans in the Senate (and only Republicans) just approved a budget that envisions a grotesque future—trillions of dollars in tax giveaways to the ultra wealthy, funded by cutting trillions from Medicaid, Medicare, and other vital programs for the poor and middle class.1,2

This vote is the starting gun for what might be the most consequential legislative fight of the Trump era: the looting of the U.S. treasury to reward billionaire GOP donors and mega-corporations, at the expense of the rest of us.

If Republicans succeed, their backers will reward them with boatloads of campaign cash—fueling their efforts to hold power in 2018 and 2020. If they fail, they'll turn on each other—opening the door toward a potential Democratic landslide. And beyond the political stakes, the human impact is vast: the acceleration of plutocracy in America and the shredding of the basic protections that tens of millions of American families depend on.

MoveOn, as part of the larger Resistance movement, is gearing up to tackle this fight with all of the urgency and relentlessness that we've brought to the battle against the Affordable Care Act repeal. Read on for a quick briefing on what's to come, but first, I need to ask you: Can you chip in $3 to help fund our fight against tax giveaways to billionaires?

Yes, I'll chip in and help defeat the Trump Republican budget.

Here's how this fight will go down:

Tonight's vote was on a budget resolution. Budget resolutions are nonbinding—they don't become law. Instead, they are moral documents—statements of priorities that shape future legislation. They have one critical function: You need to pass a budget resolution to open the door to a budget reconciliation bill, which is the only kind of tax cut bill that can't be filibustered, so it would need only 51 votes. And one of those 51 votes could be Vice President Mike Pence.

In other words, with this budget resolution in place, the GOP can shoot for a tax bill without a single Democratic vote. To defeat it, we'll need unified Democratic opposition, plus three Republicans in the Senate or 24 in the House. It's the same math that we faced with health care repeal. But winning this one will be even harder.

After the House and Senate iron out the differences between their budget resolutions (likely before Halloween), we'll enter the second stage of the battle: the fight over the tax scheme in the House.

Amidst the constant barrage of other news, the tax fight has been relatively low-profile so far. It'll probably stay that way until some time in early November, when the curtain is pulled back and the House GOP tax bill is revealed.

The public's reaction at that moment will be critical. Donanld Trump and his Republican pals will be in turbo spin mode, lying about who would benefit. (If you think that Trump has told some wild lies so far, wait until he has the chance to lie about money and a bill that would make him richer.) We can't let them get away with this. If enough of us raise our voices, together—with phone calls, protests, social media posts, letters to the editor—we can break through and make sure that the public learns what's really in the GOP bill and how it will tear at communities and hurt families around the country.

If the GOP has its way, the bill will sail through the House before Thanksgiving. But if we succeed in fighting back and make sure that it doesn't pass in November, there's a good chance that it won't pass in early December either, due to a hard deadline to pass a different, politically-complicated bill in order to avoid a government shutdown.

At some point, though, there's a good chance that this bill will pass the House. Then it goes to the Senate—the critical battlefield, where, again, three Republicans means victory.

Bob Corker of Tennessee has already said that he won't vote for a tax cut that raises the deficit by even a dime—and the GOP bill certainly does, ballooning it by at least $1.5 trillion. If Corker stands by that commitment (and we won't know until there's an actual vote), that means that we still need to secure two more Republican votes. And more if we can win them, just in case. This is our mission.

Just as with health care, we'll work in close partnership with a huge array of allies. MoveOn is a key part of two coalitions: Not One Penny—as in, not one penny in tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations—and Americans for Tax Fairness. We'll partner on days of action, coordinate floods of calls to Congress, and use creative ways to channel and dramatize the public's opposition to a bill that would make an already-rigged economy much more rigged in favor of the already best-off.

And all along the way, we'll make clear who ultimately pays for these tax cuts: people who depend on Medicaid, Medicare, and other essential government services to stay alive.

The GOP knows the political stakes. As Lindsey Graham said on national television, if Republicans don't pass these tax cuts, "we're dead."3 If they can't cut taxes for the rich and repeal the Affordable Care Act, he said that "[they're] going to lose across the board in the House in 2018."4

If the GOP loses in 2018, the American people win. And that's exactly our plan. Can you help make that happen?

Click here to chip in $3, or whatever you can afford, for our fight against the GOP tax plan.

The fight over the GOP tax bill is ultimately a fight about the moral character of our country. Are we a democracy, with government by, of, and for the people? Or are we an oligarchy, ruled by a tiny, self-serving elite?

Win or lose, standing up for the fundamental democratic idea of America is a central challenge of our time. It's a fight that we have to take part in. It's a fight that our grandchildren will thank us for winning.

Thanks for all you do.

Call Senator Schumer: Thank him for supporting the Iran nuclear deal

Senator Schumer is under attack for his support of the Iran nuclear deal. Senator Schumer is under attack for his support of the Iran nuclear deal.

Dear New York MoveOn member,

On Friday, Donald Trump recklessly decertified the Iran nuclear deal, a provocative step that could lead to the collapse of the deal and put us on a path to war.

Fortunately, Senator Chuck Schumer—leader of the Senate Democratic caucus—quickly came out to defend the deal, asserting that he wouldn't let the deal come undone.

It is critical that senators—especially leaders like Sen. Schumer—speak out for diplomacy. This agreement has been working, as Trump's own advisers and Cabinet members admit, and Democrats will play an important role in rejecting new sanctions that would undermine this diplomatic achievement.

Sen. Schumer is getting attacked—by Trump over Twitter and in the pages of the New York Post.1 It's critical he also hear from the majority of New Yorkers who support the Iran deal.

Can you call Sen. Schumer right now to thank him for defending diplomacy and to make sure his office can withstand right-wing pressure?

Here's where to call, pick any of the offices that are closest to you:

  • Senator Charles E. Schumer
    • Binghamton, NY: 607-772-6792
    • Buffalo, NY: 716-846-4111
    • Melville, NY: 631-753-0978
    • New York, NY: 212-486-4430
    • Peekskill, NY: 914-734-1532
    • Syracuse, NY: 315-423-5471
    • Rochester, NY: 585-263-5866
    • Albany, NY: 518-431-4070

Then click here and tell us how it went.

You can say: "Thank you for standing up for diplomacy and committing to defending the agreement with Iran. Your constituents stand with you. Stand strong and reject any proposals to change the terms of the deal or pass new nuclear sanctions."

This agreement was President Obama's signature diplomatic accomplishment, and it is working. The other nations and the European Union that signed on to the agreement, and the UN inspectors, all affirm that Iran is in compliance.2 Trump's dangerous move is just political showmanship.

But the power is now in the Senate to stop any moves that would destabilize the entire agreement. Sen. Schumer will be key to holding that line. He criticized the deal in the past, but has now seen that it's working—and that it's essential to defend it from Trump.

Let Sen. Schumer know that we agree with him and that we'll support him in his defense of the Iran deal.

Call now and say thanks!

Call Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand today: Protect the Trump-Russia criminal investigation

Call today along with tens of thousands of others to demand Congress protect Mueller's Trump-Russia investigation from White House interference

Dear MoveOn member,

There's finally bipartisan momentum in Congress to rein in Donald Trump's sabotage of the Russia investigation.

After months of Republican obstruction, Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and Thom Tillis are both sponsoring legislation to limit Trump's authority to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, who's leading the Trump-Russia criminal investigation.1

There are already four Democratic Senator co-sponsors between these bills: Richard Blumenthal, Cory Booker, Chris Coons, and Sheldon Whitehouse.2 Let's get more to sign on and urge their Republican colleagues to join them!

Call Sen. Schumer and Sen. Gillibrand today to ask them to co-sponsor the bills to protect the Trump-Russia investigation.

Here's where to call:

  • Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
  • Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

You can say: "I want Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand to co-sponsor legislation to protect the Trump-Russia criminal investigation from political obstruction. Please support and help pass the Graham-Booker (S.1735) and Tillis-Coons (S.1741) bills to limit Donald Trump's authority to fire special counsel Robert Mueller."

Then click here to report your call for other MoveOn members to see!

As the investigation heats up, so do the chances that Trump will try to obstruct it by firing special counsel Mueller. Let's stop him before he has the chance.

Thanks for all you do.

Call now to say: No war with Iran

Donald Trump is expected to decertify the Iran nuclear deal this week, so we need to be ready to stop a war... again! President Trump is expected to decertify the Iran Nuclear Deal this week, so we need to be ready to stop a war....again

Dear MoveOn member,

The diplomatic agreement between the United States and Iran is in trouble—and if we don't act fast, our country is at risk of putting us on a path to war with Iran.

This agreement between Iran, the United States, Russia, China, and the European Union has been in place for almost two years; it ensures that Iran is not building nuclear weapons, and, in return compels these nations to remove some sanctions against Iran.

All signs are that Iran is fully complying with the terms of the agreement.1 Every other nation in the deal believes that Iran has upheld its side of the agreement and even our top military leaders including General Joseph Dunford, the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, agree.2

But in the next few days, Donald Trump is expected to unilaterally decertify the deal, moving the U.S. away from diplomacy and, should Congress follow it up with new sanctions, risking a possible war with Iran.3 Once Trump does this, we only have 60 days to stop the Senate from fast-tracking sanctions that would cause this diplomatic deal to collapse.

Will you call your senators right now and tell them to support diplomacy and stand against any new sanctions on Iran? We need senators to speak out before Trump takes action—and need all of the Senate to know that we want diplomacy, not war. Here is where to call:

  • Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
  • Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

You can say: "The Iran nuclear deal is working. Iran is in compliance and all countries are benefiting from the peace that this diplomatic effort has achieved. Don't bring America closer to war by voting for new sanctions on Iran."

Then click here and tell us how your call went.

We know that war with Iran is not the only foreign policy threat right now. Trump continues to amp up his threatening rhetoric with North Korea, his bombing of Syria and escalation of drone strikes has only added to conflict in the Middle East, the Muslim ban 3.0 goes into effect next week, the U.S. still has a sizeable presence in Afghanistan, and more. MoveOn members are preparing now to prevent any unnecessary and devastating wars by creating a massive, rapid-response field network ready to mobilize should a dramatic and clear escalation happen. But we can head off particular potential conflict with Iran right now by preventing Congress from passing sanctions and continuing to uphold our end of the Iran nuclear deal.

Senators need to hear from their constituents right now, so they know that we want them to come out strong in favor of diplomacy and against any new sanctions on Iran that could take us to war. Will you call to tell your senators to support the Iran nuclear deal?

  • Sen. Schumer - (202) 224-6542
  • Sen. Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451

Then click here and tell us how your call went.

Diplomacy is the best way to achieve lasting solutions to security crises. We must refrain from aggressive actions that could endanger the lives of civilians and U.S. troops, undermine the nuclear deal, and put us on the path to war.

Thanks for all you do.

Elizabeth Warren vs. Donald Trump (The Dream Act)

Watch this short video of Sen. Warren making the case for the Dream Act, in stark contrast to Trump's xenophobic agenda

Dear MoveOn member,

Last night, Trump released a list of demands to Congress that hold 800,000 young immigrants, known as Dreamers, as bargaining chips—making their fate contingent on a a border wall, 10,000 more ICE agents to round up Dreamers' parents and terrorize immigrant communities, and the closing of our nation's doors to asylum seekers.

Recently, Senator Elizabeth Warren gave a speech on the critical importance of fighting for a clean Dream Act—a bipartisan, popular law that would defend immigrant youth and their families without treating Dreamers as bargaining chips—and how this can lead us to the longer-term goal of comprehensive immigration reform.

Please watch this short video of Sen. Warren and share it with friends and over social media, as a rebuke to Trump's announcement and a declaration that we all stand ready to fight for a clean Dream Act.

Elizabeth Warren and the Dream Act

(Not on Facebook? You can watch it here on YouTube.)

It is more important than ever that all of us—whether immigrants or Americans born in the U.S.—stand together right now to declare that defending the rights and contributions of Dreamers is a national priority. Passing a clean Dream Act a priority for the Resistance as we fight against the toxic Trump agenda, and it is a measure supported by a majority of Americans, including a majority of Republican voters.

More than 250,000 MoveOn members have signed petitions calling for a clean Dream Act, tens of thousands have made calls to Congress, and MoveOn members across the country will be hosting petition deliveries next week during a Dream Week of Action.

In the face of Trump's abhorrent demands yesterday, we need to elevate voices like Sen. Warren—as well as voices of Dreamers and immigrant youth, who are courageously leading this fight to uphold our best values of dignity, fairness, and justice for all.

Watch and share this video, as we continue to build momentum needed to win a strong, clean Dream Act that upholds dignity and rejects Trump's xenophobic agenda.

Thanks for all you do.

Watch now: My floor speech on Trump and nuclear war

A new military conflict on the Korean Peninsula or in the Middle East would be nothing short of catastrophic.

Dear MoveOn member,

We've been witnessing a dangerous war of words between Donald Trump and North Korean officials.

This does not make our nation any safer and is only serving to bring us closer to an all-out war.

And let me tell you: A military conflict on the Korean Peninsula would be nothing short of catastrophic.

That’s why I spoke last week from the House floor, calling for an end to Trump’s name-calling and saber rattling and for Congress to pass Representative Ted Lieu’s No First Use legislation that would prevent Trump from unilaterally launching a preemptive nuclear strike without a declaration of war by Congress.

Please watch a one-minute video of my floor speech now. And please share this call to action with your family and friends.

BarbaraLee

(Not on Facebook? Click here to watch the video on YouTube.)

A war with North Korea would put tens of millions of lives at risk, and the looming threat of nuclear war only heightens tensions.

And now, there is also a very real threat that Trump could de-certify the hard-won Iran deal, which has successfully prevented an all-out war in the Middle East.

In North Korea—and in Iran—diplomacy is the only answer. The U.S. must pursue diplomacy and reach a peaceful solution that does not put U.S. troops and families in danger. Direct talks are our best opportunity for resolving this conflict without the use of force. And yet Trump’s warmongering is taking us further and further away from that path forward.

Please help make sure your family and friends are paying attention to what’s happening—because there is something we can do, together, to help reduce the threat of nuclear war.

As always, it's good to be with MoveOn members like you, Eddie, in our common work for justice and peace.

Thanks for all you do.

Tell Donald Trump to declare the opioid crisis a "national health emergency"

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Matt Hildreth, a MoveOn member in Columbus, OH, and I started a petition to President Donald Trump, which says:

The opioid crisis must be declared a "national health emergency" so that communities can mobilize resources to fight this epidemic.

President Trump must follow up on his promise to declare a national health emergency for the opioid crisis.

This summer, Trump stated that he considered the opioid crisis to be "a national emergency." As a result, many members of the media reported that a national emergency had been declared.

However, to this day, no official emergency has been declared which means the extra resources and authority that come with such a declaration are not in play.

For example, a declaration of emergency could remove the restrictions on which doctors can prescribe two common medications for treating opioid addiction.

Or, with a declaration of emergency, the Food and Drug Administration could allow for the widespread use of an overdose antidote without a prescription.

Please join with me and demand that Donald Trump follow up on his promise to declare a national health emergency for the opioid crisis by signing this petition.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

Re: We're taking on the NRA directly. Here's how:

As we continue to grieve the tragic loss of lives in Sunday's massacre in Las Vegas, NV, let's be really, unmistakably clear: This tragedy was preventable. Gun control legislation to keep weapons of war out of our communities and reduce the frequency of these disasters is in place elsewhere in the civilized world. Just not here, in the United States.

Dear MoveOn member,

As we continue to grieve the tragic loss of lives in Sunday's massacre in Las Vegas, NV, let's be really, unmistakably clear:

This tragedy was preventable. Gun control legislation to keep weapons of war out of our communities and reduce the frequency of these disasters is in place elsewhere in the civilized world. Just not here, in the United States.

And let's also be straightforward in assessing the fight for common-sense gun safety reform so far, because the stakes are too high to spin this or to kid ourselves:

Big picture, we've been losing to the NRA. Badly.

No doubt, we've worked tirelessly to counter the NRA's power for years. And we've contributed to some hard-fought wins, like President Obama's executive order to narrow a gaping gun-show loophole and important state-level wins across the nation, from Colorado to New York.

But more often than not, the NRA is setting the national agenda and pushing America in an ever-crazier direction—from prohibiting schools from banning guns to deregulating silencers for guns.

And the body count from massacres—and daily shootings—continues to rise.

The NRA wants us to accept the status quo and give up on ever challenging its dominance in American politics. But I refuse to accept that. I believe that we must do far more than ever before. And the announcement today that they may support federal review of "stock bumps"—an incredibly modest step, meant to block real reform from moving in Congress—does signal a shift in the political climate. They may finally be on the defensive.1

Now's the moment: Let's take on the NRA's political strategy directly.

Will you chip in $3 to MoveOn's efforts to defeat NRA-backed candidates in 2017 and 2018, demonstrate that the NRA can be beat, and break its stranglehold on American politics?

Yes, I'll chip in.

Here's what we're facing—and how MoveOn members can help make the difference:

Most immediately, the NRA has plans for a massive media campaign in this November's election in Virginia, supporting the Republican candidates for governor and state legislature who toe the line on their anti-gun safety agenda.

MoveOn members have already endorsed candidates across Virginia who believe in sensible gun laws. Now we need to get them over the finish line.

One unique tool at our disposal is a data-driven innovation of using online videos to persuade and mobilize key voters. Working with the cutting-edge tools of our analysis team, our in-house Video Lab team will produce and promote cost-effective videos that can move the needle on voter turnout—at a fraction of the cost of the NRA's TV blitz.

This could help elect a slate of progressive Virginians, fine-tune our tools for 2018, and offer a clear rebuke of the NRA—shattering the myth of their political power.

Will you chip in $3 to help MoveOn's efforts to put gun control on the ballot and defeat the NRA in Virginia this year?

Yes, I'll chip in.

Then, we shift to 2018, where one of the most vulnerable Republicans up for re-election is Senator Dean Heller of Nevada. He voted repeatedly to take health care away from his own constituents, which has made him even more vulnerable in next year's race. And now, even after the terrible massacre in his state, he is refusing to stand up to the NRA and won't support sensible measures to get assault weapons out of our community.

Dean Heller must go—and MoveOn members are committed to defeating him.

We'll continue to push the message to Nevada voters and local media that Heller continues to side with corporate lobbyists against Nevadans on health care, tax breaks for the rich—and, even now, sensible gun laws.

MoveOn will run ads, hire organizers in 2018, and help fuel a grassroots uprising to remove Heller from office—and in doing so, defeat the NRA and weaken their hold on the Republican Party and Washington.

Can you chip in $3 to help defeat Dean Heller in Nevada in 2018, win seats in Virginia this year, and deal a crushing defeat to the NRA?

We might not be able to get Congress to act today, this week, or even this year (although we will try!). And there's no point in trying to convince Donald Trump. But by defeating the NRA in elections this year and next, we'll help take back the House, get more pro-gun control Democrats into office, and show the remaining Republicans that the NRA doesn't speak for the American voters—so it's time for our politicians to stand up to the NRA.

Thanks for all you do.

P.S. For more details on how we're taking on the NRA directly in the upcoming Virginia elections, see Maria's message from the other day, below:

Dear MoveOn member,

In any other country, what happened in Las Vegas, NV, on Sunday and its aftermath would be unthinkable: a devastating gun massacre followed by zero legislative action. But here in the U.S., that's just how it is—because our politics are frozen by the perceived power of the NRA.

The key word: "perceived." Because Republican politicians see the NRA as ultra-powerful, they think that staying in power means always siding with the gun lobby—against public safety. So the only way to end this lethal political limbo is to show that the NRA is not a political blessing, but, in fact, a political curse.

We've got a massive opportunity to do this—to take on the NRA in its own backyard. On November 7, Virginia—the state where the NRA's headquarters are located—will elect a governor and state legislature. This is becoming, in part, a referendum on NRA's power and has the potential to transform the perception of the gun lobby's strength—especially important as we head into the 2018 elections.

MoveOn is ready to scale up our work in Virginia to the next level—if we have the resources. Can you chip in $3 to help?

Yes, I'll chip in.

The GOP candidate for governor of Virginia, Ed Gillespie, has an "A" from the NRA and says that it's "too soon" to discuss policy change after the Las Vegas shootings. By contrast, the Democratic candidate, Ralph Northam, has an "F" from the NRA and argues that "we do not need assault weapons on our streets."2

Gun safety will be a critical issue in the House of Delegate races, too. As The Washington Post reported, "[g]un violence roils Virginia election"—the NRA is already on its heels, delaying a huge planned ad campaign by a week.3

This is it. We've got just 33 days to puncture the myth of NRA invulnerability in Virginia. Can you help?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 to help defeat the NRA in Virginia.

With your support, here's what MoveOn will do:

  • Mega-volunteer mobilization through our new custom-built, volunteer-driven text message mobilization tool. Not only can we get volunteers out in the streets, we can start testing tactics that will be central to our 2018 efforts.
  • Viral gun-safety videos on social media. The video that we posted two nights ago—featuring a gun-owning MoveOn member urging gun safety laws—has already notched a million views. We'll pay to get those videos in front of every person who needs a reminder of what's at stake. We'll also use these videos to test their impact and fine-tune our micro-targeting.
  • Media advocacy to make our message clear: In print and on TV, we'll make sure that the Virginia election serves, in part, as a referendum on the NRA's power.

If Democrats win big in Virginia, Republicans nationwide will see the wave building—accelerating a growing wave of GOP retirements and giving us our best shot at taking the House (and perhaps even the Senate) in 2018. We'll make progressive policies possible in Virginia and nationwide. And we'll show that an unapologetic anti-gun-violence position can help win elections.

Can you chip in $3 support this critical work?

Yes—I'm in!

In the United States of America, power should flow from people voting at the ballot box, not a shadowy special interest group committed to undermining public safety. The horror in Las Vegas should not paralyze us, but propel us to action. Let's stand up to fight for a country in which no one has to live in fear and where our democracy is worthy of its people.

Thanks for all you do.

Add your name: Gun control now

Will you sign and share my petition telling Congress that we need commonsense gun control now? Click here to sign.

Dear MoveOn member,

What's unfolding in Las Vegas—one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern United States history—is yet another tragic illustration of the effects of gun violence in our country.1 And in the aftermath, it's clear that families and individuals will need emergency aid measures such as blood donations, grief counseling, and more.

We also know that the days to come will be a moment to confront and have public discussion about our nation's gun violence epidemic.

Will you sign and share my petition telling Congress that we need commonsense gun control now and help encourage public dialogue on gun control? Click here to sign.

We need commonsense gun control now.

I'm a MoveOn member. I'm a gun owner. I'm a Christian. I'm a Grammy-winning country music producer. And I'm asking us to come together, in the wake of one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history, and stand up to the NRA by calling for an end to senseless gun violence.

We need commonsense gun control now, including the following:

  • Ban civilian ownership of weapons designed for warfare.
  • Close the gun show loophole.
  • Create certificates of ownership for firearms, similar to automobiles, which should be governed by similar regulations, including the need for training, testing, and insurance.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks for taking action!

Puerto Rico

Lin-Manuel Miranda here. I wrote "Hamilton." I'm writing you today to ask for your help.

Hello hello hello, MoveOn member,

Lin-Manuel Miranda here. I wrote "Hamilton." I'm writing you today to ask for your help.

Puerto Rico—my family’s island, America’s island—is in desperate need of supplies and resources. Like Texas and Florida, Puerto Rico was just devastated by a natural disaster, but Puerto Rico’s need is magnified by the island’s geographic isolation from the U.S. mainland. It’s been over a week since Hurricane Maria, but so far, help for Puerto Rico is in short supply.

That's why I'm asking for your help with hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. Click here to make a tax-deductible contribution to the relief efforts on the ground through MoveOn, and they will pay 100% of the credit card fees.

There's no shortage of heartbreaking stories about the devastation experienced by people in my beloved Puerto Rico.

From the children still searching for their parents, to the families who've lost everything but one another, to those displaced from the only homes they've ever known … Hurricane Maria's destruction of Puerto Rico has been the most brutal disaster in the island's modern history, leaving a destroyed power grid and unprecedented destruction in its wake.

If you’re able to help, please click here to make a tax-deductible contribution to support relief in Puerto Rico, and MoveOn will pay 100% of the credit card fees.

My cousin Daniela lives in Puerto Rico and is studying to be a veterinarian. Her parents' home in the hills of Vega Alta is practically an animal sanctuary—there are two goats, a number of cats, several bunnies and a few birds, nine dogs(!) and a couple of horses. Her older sister Camila has been studying recently for the MCAT exam—she wants to be a doctor.

Across the street from their home is my Aunt Yamilla's house, formerly the home of my grandparents and the place where my sister and I spent every summer as children. I remember when my grandfather Guisin was building it—at last, he was moving up to the peaceful hills after a life in town.

As Hurricane Maria roared toward Puerto Rico earlier this month, my family in Puerto Rico braced for impact.

They knew that the wooden house built by Abuelo Guisin—my grandparents’ dream home, where I worked on new musicals during summer breaks from college—could not possibly withstand a major hurricane.

For a time, my uncle's concrete house across the street became Noah's ark, as my family sought refuge there—huddled together, along with Daniela's animal menagerie and the precious things that can't be replaced, like family photos and mementos that represent memories of generations of Mirandas.

My late grandfather's dream home is in pieces, the roof and the porch gone. Needless to say, my cousin Camila's MCAT exam has been postponed indefinitely. Thankfully, Noah's ark—my cousins’ family home across the road—still stands, and my family is safe so far.

I’m sharing my family's story to give you just a glimpse of what our island is going through.

The truth is that my family was very lucky compared to many. But they and their fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico now face a host of mounting crises—a lack of running water, a shattered power grid, no access to telephone service, and being unable to connect to the outside world.

There are 3.4 million people in Puerto Rico, each with their own powerful story, and they need our help.

Puerto Ricans need supplies and resources just as badly as their fellow American citizens in Texas and Florida, and this need is magnified by their geographic isolation from the U.S. mainland.

Please, click here to help.

The Hispanic Federation is currently facilitating the deployment of fully-trained and certified first responders, including paying for flights to Puerto Rico and related expenses. These first responders—comprised of NYPD and FDNY members and others—will join relief efforts on the island and provide the technical support and expertise that’s so badly needed. Relief efforts include examining the structural integrity of buildings so that individuals can safely return to their homes to providing basic supplies like food and clean water.

They need your help to keep it up. Click here to make a tax-deductible gift.

With so much to be done and such great urgency before us, let's help Puerto Rico dig out and rise up. Do it for Daniela and Camila and their dreams. Do it for your fellow citizens.

Siempre,

—Lin-Manuel Miranda

Sign the petition re: Puerto Rico

Will you sign my petition to Congress demanding that it take meaningful action to provide emergency aid to and help rebuild Puerto Rico?

Dear MoveOn member,

Imagine if after a devastating natural disaster New York was forgotten by the federal government and had to wait more than one week for real emergency relief. Wouldn't you be outraged?

Well, as you read this message, 3.4 million American citizens in Puerto Rico are struggling for survival in the wake of two devastating hurricanes that happened more than one week ago.1

Nearly half of Puerto Rico has no access to clean water. The majority of Puerto Rico still has no electricity. Puerto Ricans have almost no access to medical care. No way to communicate. We need Congress and FEMA to do more. MUCH more. And they need to do it now

Will you sign and share my emergency petition demanding that Congress immediately take action to provide aid and rebuild my home, Puerto Rico? Click here to add your name.

My petition to Congress says:

Help the people of Puerto Rico immediately by moving FEMA into meaningful action, cancelling Puerto Rico's massive debt, and permanently ending the Jones Act.

I was born in Puerto Rico, and my parents still live on the island in Bayamon, a town near the capital city of San Juan. I am a New York state senator from the Bronx, and many of my constituents are Puerto Rican. Hurricanes Irma and Maria have laid waste to my home; what's happening there is personal for me.

I have been able to speak to my parents twice, and they are OK so far. They have enough food and water for about a week—but time is running out.

I'm lucky that I've been able to reach them at all. Constituents are coming into my office who can't reach their families. One man can't reach his mother; he doesn't know if she has access to medicine and is worried about her survival.

Lives are on the line. Please, click here to add your name and help call attention to this crisis before it's too late.

Thus far, the response from Congress and FEMA has not come even close to addressing the tragic destruction and human suffering on the island. Congress and FEMA must:

1. Adequately address this tragedy by devoting the immediate people power and resources that Puerto Ricans need and deserve.

2. Cancel Puerto Rico's $73 billion in predatory debt.3

3. Pass a significant relief and recovery package that includes a permanent end to the Jones Act, so that Puerto Rico has the resources both for this acute crisis and for the longer rebuilding process. Puerto Rico must rebuild, but the same vultures who caused this crisis are going to try and make money off of Puerto Rico’s rebuilding effort, and we cannot let that happen.4

Click here to add your name to my petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Numerous credible sources report that basic relief functions in Puerto Rico are in shameful chaos.5 And as time passes, this is only going to get worse. Let's make sure that Congress acts before it's too late.

Thanks for all you do.

–State Senator Gustavo Rivera, New York

The most dangerous Senate candidate in years

Doug Jones' opponent, Roy Moore, would be a danger to our entire country. Moore believes that gay people should be imprisoned and that Muslims shouldn't be allowed to serve in Congress. He'll rubber-stamp Donald Trump's agenda, all while advancing a twisted ideology that devalues tens of millions of Americans.

Dear MoveOn member,

In a few moments, I'm going to ask you to support Doug Jones, the MoveOn-endorsed Democratic candidate for Senate from Alabama. I hope that you'll give me a chance to explain why we think this ask is so important and keep reading.

If elected, Doug Jones' opponent, Roy Moore, could become the most dangerous senator in America. You might have heard of Moore—he's known as the "Ten Commandments Judge" and has been suspended from the bench in the past for defying court orders. As senator, he would be a danger to our entire country. Imagine someone who believes that gay people should be imprisoned and thinks Muslims shouldn't be allowed to serve in Congress having the power to block judicial nominees! If Roy Moore wins the Senate seat that used to belong to Donald Trump's Attorney General Jeff Sessions, he will have that power.

But there's strong reason for hope, because Democrat Doug Jones is a great candidate with a path to victory. Jones is pro-choice, pro-Affordable Care Act, and has an incredible personal story about the evils of racism and white supremacy. Back in 2002, Jones led the prosecution of KKK terrorists, finally bringing them to justice for a 1963 bombing of a Black church in Birmingham that killed four young girls.

And he can win! Polls show that Jones is within single digits of winning.1 And winning this race—in Alabama, among the reddest of deep-red states—would be a tremendous blow to Trump's agenda. We would keep the most dangerous Senate candidate in years out of the Senate, win an incredibly inspiring victory, and be one step closer to taking back the Senate.

Which is why I'm asking: Can you make a contribution of $9—or whatever you can afford—before Saturday's Federal Election Commission's fundraising deadline?

Yes, I'll donate now to help ensure that progressive champion Doug Jones and MoveOn have the resources and momentum to defeat Republican Roy Moore.

Our resistance to Trump's hateful agenda has been remarkably successful, but we need even more allies in the Senate to help win the fights ahead.

Winning a Democratic Senate seat in Alabama would make it much harder for Trump (and Mitch McConnell) to pass disastrous legislation or confirm radical right-wing judges, and could even give us a shot at taking back the Senate in 2018! That's why this is so important.

We have a real opportunity to shock the nation and win this race, but it'll take thousands of progressives pitching in small amounts to make it happen.

Your contribution—of $3, $6, $9, or whatever you can afford—could mean the difference between victory or defeat in what is expected to be a close election.

Your support will provide the resources we need to run get-out-the-vote efforts across the state, help the Jones campaign spread his progressive message, and help fight back against Republican attacks by communicating with voters through targeted advertising and field programs.

Right-wing extremists and Trump mega-donors are already terrified of how competitive Democrats are in deep-red Alabama and what that means for the 2018 elections. So let's focus on coming together to really give them something to worry about. Let's make it clear that we're not going to write off any part of this country to the right wing.

Donate $9 now to Doug Jones and MoveOn's efforts to help him win. Let's shock the country and win this race!

Let's stop the Republicans from replacing Jeff Sessions with an even crazier, more conservative Republican like Roy Moore; instead, let's elect a progressive champion who will stand up to Trump every single day in Washington.

Thanks for all you do.

VICTORY! (Zombie Trumpcare is dead for now; we'll stay vigilant.)

Mitch McConnell was forced to postpone the Senate vote on Trumpcare (the vote was supposed to be TODAY.)

Dear MoveOn member,

Living in America in the Trump era feels like living in a horror movie. But even in horror movies, the monster can be defeated.

Today, Mitch McConnell and the Senate GOP conceded that they don't have the votes to pass the Graham-Cassidy bill, the latest and most deadly incarnation of Trumpcare.1 Make no mistake: This victory was due to the the massive and relentless uprising by MoveOn members and our many allies across the country. Tens of millions of American families will be safer and healthier thanks to our collective efforts.

But horror movies have sequels, and monsters come back to life. This one's likely to be no different. Republicans failed at this particular attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act, but they can still try again. The truth is that the danger of repeal won't fade until Republicans no longer control Congress and the White House. We can't let our guard down—and we have to keep the pressure on.

To make sure that you're ready for the next set of fights—on health care or whatever else comes our way—click here to sign up for text message updates from MoveOn.

(And if you're already signed up for text alerts—invite a friend to sign up through that link!)

While we can't rest in the long run, it's worth taking a moment to express gratitude.

Gratitude to the millions of people who made phone calls, protested at lawmakers' offices, donated and marched and spread the word—the millions of people who fueled this movement.

Gratitude to the people with disabilities who put their bodies on the line, protesting at the Senate hearing this Monday. Gratitude to the enormous, united coalition—Planned Parenthood and Indivisible, ADAPT and the Little Lobbyists, the SEIU and the Center for Popular Democracy, UltraViolet and so many other groups—plus every major health care organization and every single Democrat and Independent in Congress who redoubled their efforts every time Republicans came again for our health care.

Gratitude to Susan Collins and John McCain for doing the right thing. Gratitude to the Democratic and independent senators who said no to repeal again and again and didn't waver—and to the 16 senators who joined together to call for Medicare for All last week to push us toward a truly constructive conversation on how to strengthen health care for all Americans.

Our movement will never rest. Our movement will always #resist. Our movement will keep fighting for something better: for a health care system—and a country—that has a place of honor and dignity in it for everyone.

Thanks, friends, for all you do.

Want to support our work? The GOP attempt to rip coverage away from millions of Americans has once again crumbled in the face of furious opposition. But it's now clear that health care repeal will remain a threat until Republicans no longer control Congress and the White House. Will you support our work to build an electoral landslide that destroys the GOP's political power in 2018, starting with the House of Representatives?

Yes, I'll chip in $5 a month.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
