Resistance Recess is happening now.

August congressional recess is here—and an opportunity to speak directly with our members of Congress about justice, health care, and defending our communities.

Dear MoveOn member,

This past weekend, following the white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, we saw something remarkable: tens of thousands of Americans showing up at spontaneous vigils and rallies across the country to stand in solidarity with the people of Charlottesville and the communities of color that have been targeted by white supremacists. These events were a reminder that there are countless Americans ready to show up when it comes to fighting to make our country a more just and equitable one for all of us.

And now we have a very real, direct opportunity to bring a message of justice, inclusion, sanity, and accountability to our members of Congress, who are home for their August recess from now until September 4. Already, MoveOn members and allies have been holding actions at the home offices of senators and representatives to make known that THEY WORK FOR US. And over the next three weeks, we expect these actions—town halls, rallies, office visits, and more—to escalate.

Just weeks ago, our movement scored a huge victory, stopping Trumpcare from taking health care from millions of Americans. It is indicative of our strength and of our commitment to the Resistance. And we saw that power and resilience again this weekend, as our movement turned out quickly, peacefully, and passionately to stand against white supremacy—at more than 600 events hosted by allies and regular folks all around the country.

Let's use this recess to keep hammering home the messages we need Congress to hear: Together, we need to let our lawmakers know that they must stop Trump from taking us to war with his dangerous rhetoric. Health care is a fundamental right, and we'll continue to hold accountable those members of Congress who voted to take it away from millions of Americans. We will let them know that any tax cuts for the 1% are unacceptable. And we will demand that every lawmaker speak out forcefully against white supremacists and the so-called "alt-right" movement as we also fight for the rights of immigrants, Muslims, people of color, and all the communities targeted by the hate we saw on display in Virginia.

Here’s how it works:

  • We show up at our elected officials’ events, town halls, and other public appearances to demand answers we are entitled to as constituents.

  • We will hold Republicans accountable for supporting the attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act—and let them know that when they attack our health care, our communities, and our democracy, it doesn’t go unnoticed.

  • Progressives demand a forceful, progressive, inclusive, populist agenda—resistance alone isn't enough. We need Democrats to take strong stands and build momentum for policies we want, such as single-payer Medicare for All.

  • When lawmakers hide from their constituents by not scheduling public events, we will hold our own. We will hold "People’s Speak-outs" to highlight the members of Congress who won’t even hear from the people they supposedly represent.

Thanks for all you do.

P.S. What if there's no event hosted by your lawmakers listed on the site? First, call your representative's and/or senators' district and D.C. offices to see if they are planning on holding a public town hall or office hours. Then...

If YES, they say that they are holding a town hall or office hours, submit the event here, and we will invite other constituents to join you.

If you discover that your members of Congress are NOT hosting a town hall within a reasonable distance from you, you can host a People’s Speak-out—an event that constituents hold to have their voices heard and highlight their lawmaker's lack of a formal town hall. A People’s Speak-out is a great way to get media attention and elevate the fact that your lawmaker is avoiding constituents during the congressional recess!

How do you plan one?

  • Find a location—such as a library, event space, or even outside a member of Congress’s district office—and pick a time and date.

  • Invite your member of Congress.

  • Click here to post your event on ResistanceRecess.com, and MoveOn and partner groups will invite fellow constituents.

  • Put together an agenda and let the media know.

  • Check out our materials page for all the guides and information you need to plan an event.

  • Have an awesome event!
