Sign the petition re: Puerto Rico

Will you sign my petition to Congress demanding that it take meaningful action to provide emergency aid to and help rebuild Puerto Rico?

Dear MoveOn member,

Imagine if after a devastating natural disaster New York was forgotten by the federal government and had to wait more than one week for real emergency relief. Wouldn't you be outraged?

Well, as you read this message, 3.4 million American citizens in Puerto Rico are struggling for survival in the wake of two devastating hurricanes that happened more than one week ago.1

Nearly half of Puerto Rico has no access to clean water. The majority of Puerto Rico still has no electricity. Puerto Ricans have almost no access to medical care. No way to communicate. We need Congress and FEMA to do more. MUCH more. And they need to do it now

Will you sign and share my emergency petition demanding that Congress immediately take action to provide aid and rebuild my home, Puerto Rico? Click here to add your name.

My petition to Congress says:

Help the people of Puerto Rico immediately by moving FEMA into meaningful action, cancelling Puerto Rico's massive debt, and permanently ending the Jones Act.

I was born in Puerto Rico, and my parents still live on the island in Bayamon, a town near the capital city of San Juan. I am a New York state senator from the Bronx, and many of my constituents are Puerto Rican. Hurricanes Irma and Maria have laid waste to my home; what's happening there is personal for me.

I have been able to speak to my parents twice, and they are OK so far. They have enough food and water for about a week—but time is running out.

I'm lucky that I've been able to reach them at all. Constituents are coming into my office who can't reach their families. One man can't reach his mother; he doesn't know if she has access to medicine and is worried about her survival.

Lives are on the line. Please, click here to add your name and help call attention to this crisis before it's too late.

Thus far, the response from Congress and FEMA has not come even close to addressing the tragic destruction and human suffering on the island. Congress and FEMA must:

1. Adequately address this tragedy by devoting the immediate people power and resources that Puerto Ricans need and deserve.

2. Cancel Puerto Rico's $73 billion in predatory debt.3

3. Pass a significant relief and recovery package that includes a permanent end to the Jones Act, so that Puerto Rico has the resources both for this acute crisis and for the longer rebuilding process. Puerto Rico must rebuild, but the same vultures who caused this crisis are going to try and make money off of Puerto Rico’s rebuilding effort, and we cannot let that happen.4

Click here to add your name to my petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Numerous credible sources report that basic relief functions in Puerto Rico are in shameful chaos.5 And as time passes, this is only going to get worse. Let's make sure that Congress acts before it's too late.

Thanks for all you do.

–State Senator Gustavo Rivera, New York

The most dangerous Senate candidate in years

Doug Jones' opponent, Roy Moore, would be a danger to our entire country. Moore believes that gay people should be imprisoned and that Muslims shouldn't be allowed to serve in Congress. He'll rubber-stamp Donald Trump's agenda, all while advancing a twisted ideology that devalues tens of millions of Americans.

Dear MoveOn member,

In a few moments, I'm going to ask you to support Doug Jones, the MoveOn-endorsed Democratic candidate for Senate from Alabama. I hope that you'll give me a chance to explain why we think this ask is so important and keep reading.

If elected, Doug Jones' opponent, Roy Moore, could become the most dangerous senator in America. You might have heard of Moore—he's known as the "Ten Commandments Judge" and has been suspended from the bench in the past for defying court orders. As senator, he would be a danger to our entire country. Imagine someone who believes that gay people should be imprisoned and thinks Muslims shouldn't be allowed to serve in Congress having the power to block judicial nominees! If Roy Moore wins the Senate seat that used to belong to Donald Trump's Attorney General Jeff Sessions, he will have that power.

But there's strong reason for hope, because Democrat Doug Jones is a great candidate with a path to victory. Jones is pro-choice, pro-Affordable Care Act, and has an incredible personal story about the evils of racism and white supremacy. Back in 2002, Jones led the prosecution of KKK terrorists, finally bringing them to justice for a 1963 bombing of a Black church in Birmingham that killed four young girls.

And he can win! Polls show that Jones is within single digits of winning.1 And winning this race—in Alabama, among the reddest of deep-red states—would be a tremendous blow to Trump's agenda. We would keep the most dangerous Senate candidate in years out of the Senate, win an incredibly inspiring victory, and be one step closer to taking back the Senate.

Which is why I'm asking: Can you make a contribution of $9—or whatever you can afford—before Saturday's Federal Election Commission's fundraising deadline?

Yes, I'll donate now to help ensure that progressive champion Doug Jones and MoveOn have the resources and momentum to defeat Republican Roy Moore.

Our resistance to Trump's hateful agenda has been remarkably successful, but we need even more allies in the Senate to help win the fights ahead.

Winning a Democratic Senate seat in Alabama would make it much harder for Trump (and Mitch McConnell) to pass disastrous legislation or confirm radical right-wing judges, and could even give us a shot at taking back the Senate in 2018! That's why this is so important.

We have a real opportunity to shock the nation and win this race, but it'll take thousands of progressives pitching in small amounts to make it happen.

Your contribution—of $3, $6, $9, or whatever you can afford—could mean the difference between victory or defeat in what is expected to be a close election.

Your support will provide the resources we need to run get-out-the-vote efforts across the state, help the Jones campaign spread his progressive message, and help fight back against Republican attacks by communicating with voters through targeted advertising and field programs.

Right-wing extremists and Trump mega-donors are already terrified of how competitive Democrats are in deep-red Alabama and what that means for the 2018 elections. So let's focus on coming together to really give them something to worry about. Let's make it clear that we're not going to write off any part of this country to the right wing.

Donate $9 now to Doug Jones and MoveOn's efforts to help him win. Let's shock the country and win this race!

Let's stop the Republicans from replacing Jeff Sessions with an even crazier, more conservative Republican like Roy Moore; instead, let's elect a progressive champion who will stand up to Trump every single day in Washington.

Thanks for all you do.

VICTORY! (Zombie Trumpcare is dead for now; we'll stay vigilant.)

Mitch McConnell was forced to postpone the Senate vote on Trumpcare (the vote was supposed to be TODAY.)

Dear MoveOn member,

Living in America in the Trump era feels like living in a horror movie. But even in horror movies, the monster can be defeated.

Today, Mitch McConnell and the Senate GOP conceded that they don't have the votes to pass the Graham-Cassidy bill, the latest and most deadly incarnation of Trumpcare.1 Make no mistake: This victory was due to the the massive and relentless uprising by MoveOn members and our many allies across the country. Tens of millions of American families will be safer and healthier thanks to our collective efforts.

But horror movies have sequels, and monsters come back to life. This one's likely to be no different. Republicans failed at this particular attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act, but they can still try again. The truth is that the danger of repeal won't fade until Republicans no longer control Congress and the White House. We can't let our guard down—and we have to keep the pressure on.

To make sure that you're ready for the next set of fights—on health care or whatever else comes our way—click here to sign up for text message updates from MoveOn.

(And if you're already signed up for text alerts—invite a friend to sign up through that link!)

While we can't rest in the long run, it's worth taking a moment to express gratitude.

Gratitude to the millions of people who made phone calls, protested at lawmakers' offices, donated and marched and spread the word—the millions of people who fueled this movement.

Gratitude to the people with disabilities who put their bodies on the line, protesting at the Senate hearing this Monday. Gratitude to the enormous, united coalition—Planned Parenthood and Indivisible, ADAPT and the Little Lobbyists, the SEIU and the Center for Popular Democracy, UltraViolet and so many other groups—plus every major health care organization and every single Democrat and Independent in Congress who redoubled their efforts every time Republicans came again for our health care.

Gratitude to Susan Collins and John McCain for doing the right thing. Gratitude to the Democratic and independent senators who said no to repeal again and again and didn't waver—and to the 16 senators who joined together to call for Medicare for All last week to push us toward a truly constructive conversation on how to strengthen health care for all Americans.

Our movement will never rest. Our movement will always #resist. Our movement will keep fighting for something better: for a health care system—and a country—that has a place of honor and dignity in it for everyone.

Thanks, friends, for all you do.

I need a second of your time. Just one.

I'm going to cut right to the chase, because we don't have much time. This week, probably on Wednesday or Thursday, Senate Republicans are planning to vote on the latest—and cruelest—version of Trumpcare.

Hi, MoveOn member,

This is Robert Reich. I'm going to cut right to the chase, because we don't have much time.

This week, probably on Wednesday or Thursday, Senate Republicans are planning to vote on the latest—and cruelest—version of Trumpcare. To stop the bill, we need three Republicans to vote no. So far, a handful of Republicans have expressed concerns—and John McCain came out on Friday saying he couldn't vote for the bill, which is a huge relief.

But don't be fooled: We don't have enough public commitments from Republican senators yet. If we ease up on the public outcry against this bill, it could absolutely still pass this week and yank health care away from over 32 million people.

We have just a couple of days left to mobilize the overwhelming grassroots pressure needed to save health care for tens of millions of people. Will you help MoveOn pull it off?

Yes, I'll chip in $3 and help stop Trumpcare.

Like previous versions of the bill, the Graham-Cassidy proposal will take away health care from tens of millions of Americans, remove protections for pre-existing conditions, and end Medicaid as we know it.

But this bill includes new and especially damaging provisions:

  • It explicitly aims to take money away from states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act—mostly blue states—and give it to the Republican states that refused to allow their working poor to access the program.
  • Medicaid is turned into a block grant program, and states aren't even required to use the money to provide health care.
  • It eliminates the individual mandate and doesn't even try to replace it with another approach, virtually guaranteeing the collapse of the individual market as healthy people flee the market leaving only the sickest and most expensive clients paying in.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said that the bill is even "more radical" than the previous versions of Trumpcare.1 Insurance companies have come out against it, as has a national organization of Medicaid program directors, with includes members from the reddest of red states.2,3

And the polling shows that the bill is as unpopular as it deserves to be. Just 24% of Americans support this latest version of Trumpcare, while the Affordable Care Act is supported by 54%.4

This is pretty much the worst piece of legislation that I've ever seen. We must defeat it. Will you chip in $3?

Yes, I'll chip in and help defeat Trumpcare.

I believe that MoveOn's plan to fight this bill can work. With your help, they will:

  • Ensure that Republicans are flooded with hundreds of thousands of phone calls in the final 72-hour stretch by reaching out directly to Americans who need a personal phone call or text message to take action.
  • Make sure that people know about rallies, protests, and vigils in their community—and encourage them to participate.
  • Run hard-hitting ads featuring stories of Americans in key states who will lose coverage if this travesty of a bill becomes law.
  • And more.

Will you chip in $3 and help MoveOn's plan succeed?

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

Fight Trumpcare. Right now. From anywhere!

Call progressives whose senators support Trumpcare.

Dear MoveOn member,

The fight to stop the latest attack on health care is in a critical 72-hour sprint as Republicans seek to push through the Graham-Cassidy bill that would take health care from 32 million Americans, slash protections for pre-existing conditions, and end Medicaid as we know it. While it will come down to getting just three Republican senators to vote no, there is action that you can take even if you're represented by two senators who already oppose this bill—and you can take it now, in just a few minutes, from your own home.

MoveOn has teamed up with our friends at Indivisible, who have set up a tool that allows you to call progressive voters in key states and urge them to call their senators. We know that calls to Senate offices make a difference—and you can play a role by asking fellow progressives to make their voices heard.

Click here to start making calls to progressives in the states with key Republican senators and help them demand that their Senators oppose Trumpcare. (You will not be added to new mailing lists and nobody will see your phone number in this process.)

Last time, we defeated Trumpcare on the Senate floor by just ONE vote—and this time could be just as close.

Your senators have already stated that they oppose this bill, so they don't need to hear from you on this issue right now (though you could call and say thanks). But we do need two more Republican senators to oppose taking health care away from 32 million Americans—which is why we're asking members in "safe" states to call progressives in a dozen key states to encourage them to contact their senators. Will you join in?

Click here to start making calls to progressives in the states with key Republican senators to urge them to flood their own senators' offices with calls.

We know that this tactic works. In July, activists with MoveOn's close partner Indivisible made 100,000 calls to progressives in key states in the final days before the Trumpcare vote, during which time MoveOn members were also generating hundreds of thousands of calls to the Senate. Now, as MoveOn members in key states continue to make tens of thousands of calls, fellow MoveOn members across the country can join Indivisible in supercharging this national call program.

Click here to start making calls to progressives in the states with key Republican senators.

Heading into the last Trumpcare vote, the odds were stacked against us. But we took those odds, and we did everything we could in spite of them. Now, with just days left to defeat Trumpcare for good, we owe it to ourselves to give it everything we've got.

Thanks for all you do—again and again!

A frightening (and dangerous) Trumpcare moment

Imagine waking up three days from today, turning on the news, and feeling like you've been punched in the gut.

Dear MoveOn member,

Imagine waking up just a few days from now, turning on the news, and feeling like you've been punched in the gut.

Imagine finding out that, in the dead of night, 50 Republicans (with help from Mike Pence) flipped just three Senate votes and passed the Graham-Cassidy Trumpcare bill—a bill that would take away health care from tens of millions of Americans, drive up insurance premiums, slash Medicaid funding by hundreds of billions of dollars, and eviscerate protections for pre-existing conditions.

That's a terrible thing to imagine—but could come true in just a matter of days.

Now imagine the alternative: The resistance—that includes you, Eddie—mounts an all-hands-on-deck, 72-hour push to stop Trumpcare ... And together, we win!

Imagine tens of millions of Americans—including those actively fighting cancer or dealing with debilitating chronic conditions—celebrating getting to keep their health coverage. The resistance, once again, showed that we are powerful. Energized, we've set the stage to win a clean Dream Act, block the worst elements of Trump's "Robin Hood in reverse" tax plan, and build the groundwork and infrastructure that progressives need to take back power in 2018 and 2020, as well as setting the stage for a more proactive debate on truly expanding access to health care as a human right.

Republicans have never been this close to passing Trumpcare—to stop them, we need three Republicans to commit to voting against it, and that hasn't happened yet. Though momentum seems to be on our side, with Senator John McCain announcing his apparent opposition to the bill on Friday, this is still WAY too close for comfort. We have just days before a key procedural deadline to ensure we defeat this terrible bill, and a vote is expected as early as Wednesday.

What our future will look like is up to us—and how well we organize. Which is why I'm writing you to ask:

Will you support MoveOn's emergency 72-hour sprint to save health care for 32 million Americans? Click here to chip in $3 or whatever you can afford.

The latest version of Trumpcare is really bad—it's the worst one so far. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said that the bill is even "more radical" than the previous versions of Trumpcare.1 Insurance companies have come out against it, as has a national organization of Medicaid program directors, with includes members from the reddest of red states.2,3

In short: The Graham-Cassidy bill is pretty much the worst piece of legislation that I've ever seen. And the polling shows that the bill is as unpopular as it deserves to be. Just 24% of Americans support the latest version of Trumpcare, while the Affordable Care Act is supported by 54%.4

I could give you reason after reason why this latest version of Trumpcare shouldn't be considered. (Is tens of millions of Americans losing their health care reason enough? How about taking away protections for pre-existing conditions?)

Senator Chuck Grassley recently said, "Republicans campaigned on this so often that you have a responsibility to carry out what you said in the campaign."Republicans believe that they must pass this bill because they promised their most hard-right supporters that they would—no matter how deadly it is. The only way to stop them is to make them realize that their constituents will hold them accountable if they follow through. We have to get Republicans to see that the political price is just too high.

And that's where MoveOn's all-hands-on-deck push comes in. With your help, MoveOn will reach every possible constituent of on-the-fence senators, make sure that senators' phones ring off the hook, ensure that protests happen at senators' offices, and that hard-hitting ads run during the crucial last 72 hours.

Will you chip in $3 to support MoveOn's emergency 72-hour sprint to save health care for 32 million Americans? Click here if you can.

I know that a lot has been asked of you in recent months. But the moment we're in requires sustained effort from all of us. If you're frustrated, you're not the only one—believe me, I'm frustrated, too. And so is former President Barack Obama. He recently said that it's "frustrating to have to mobilize every couple of months to keep our leaders from inflicting real human suffering on our constituents."6

But consider how well our mobilization is working so far. We're successful because we don't give up.

Sustained mobilization during dark political times is the only way that permanent progress will be won, so I hope that you'll join me in this huge push for our collective values.

Thanks—so much—for all you do.

–Robert Reich

FW: Stop this moral atrocity.

Eddie—There's still time to defeat Trumpcare if enough of us come together to raise our voices and put grassroots pressure on the Republicans.

Eddie—There’s still time to defeat Trumpcare if enough of us come together to raise our voices and put grassroots pressure on the Republicans. Donate $3 now to defeat the GOP's Graham-Cassidy "health care" plan by supporting MoveOn's work to win over senators who are still on the fence.

For more details on what MoveOn is doing and why your support matters so much, please see my message from earlier this week, below:

Dear MoveOn member,

After multiple failed attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, my Republican colleagues in the Senate are trying one last-ditch, desperate effort to take away health care access from tens of millions of Americans.

Here's the truth: This bill, the Graham-Cassidy plan, is an even more damaging draft of Trumpcare than the ones before. Republicans know that it can't pass in the Senate under normal circumstances, so they're putting fast-track efforts into play.

They have until September 30 to pass this bill without the 60 votes they'd normally need, and because they know this plan is so harmful and is already incredibly unpopular, they are recklessly rushing to a vote in less than two weeks. They're not even letting the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office give a comprehensive score of the bill—including an estimate of how many millions of people would lose health care if this moral atrocity passes.

We need to stop this bill from passing, so that's why I'm asking you to support MoveOn's emergency campaign to defeat it. Your donation will pay for rapid-response ads and grassroots organizing to stop this bill now— before it's too late.

Will you pitch in $3 to support MoveOn's campaign against the Graham-Cassidy Trumpcare bill? Click here.

Here's what MoveOn is working on, and needs your help to expand:

  • Keeping the phones ringing off the hook. They are actively driving calls over email and using advanced analytics and phone technology to empower volunteer teams to call and send text messages to millions of folks who are represented by Republican senators.
  • Protesting on Capitol Hill and across the country to show the intensity of opposition to this bill. Just yesterday, MoveOn organized an emergency rally outside the Capitol that I and a dozen other senators attended—and now they are rolling out actions with allies all around the U.S. over the next 10 days.
  • Running ads in targeted states that expose the horrific cost of repealing the Affordable Care Act.
  • Making grants to local organizers in key states to aid emergency organizing efforts.

Can you donate $3 now to make sure that MoveOn has the resources to fight and defeat the latest—and scariest—GOP plan to repeal health care?

For many Americans, this legislation could mean the difference between life and death. The Graham-Cassidy bill not only rolls back protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions, but also includes devastating cuts to Medicaid, dramatic cost increases for seniors and people with disabilities, and many other awful provisions.

If we don't act right now to stop Republicans from rushing this bill into law by September 30, millions of Americans will lose their health insurance.

Eddie, I need you to step up and join us in this fight now. Can I count on you to chip in to fund MoveOn's critical rapid-response work today?

Click here to contribute $3, or whatever you can afford, to help MoveOn defeat Trumpcare.

I believe that we can defeat this bill—once and for all. But we can only succeed if all of us work together.

Thanks for all you do.

Sign the petition re: Cassidy-Graham repeal proposal

Will you sign and share the petition urging senators to defeat the newest effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act?

Add your name: Save health care for 2,212,000 people in New York

The Cassidy-Graham bill is the newest version of Trumpcare that will take away health care from millions of Americans. We, the people of New York, urge our senators to defeat all efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Dear New York MoveOn member,

I'm a retired physician who believes that we need to save lives by passing Medicare for All—the only health care bill that will help all Americans achieve access to health care.

But until that day comes, we must defeat every attempt to make our health care worse—like the newest version of Trumpcare, the deadly Cassidy-Graham proposal in the Senate.

Because of massive grassroots pressure, Sen. McCain just announced that he is against the Cassidy-Graham proposal. But this bill is not dead yet—Republicans need only a few more votes to pass it.1

We must take action NOW—the Senate is planning to vote on this proposal next week and the outcome is still uncertain. Click here to sign my petition.

If the Cassidy-Graham bill is passed, 2,212,000 people are estimated to lose insurance in New York alone—11.20% of the state's total estimated population.2,3

We must defeat this bill so that the Affordable Care Act can remain in place to save lives until we, the people, convince our representatives to pass Medicare for All.

Click here to add your name to my petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Michael Rushnak

Stop this moral atrocity

After multiple failed attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, my Republican colleagues in the Senate are trying one last-ditch, desperate effort to take away health care access from tens of millions of Americans.

The progressive movement just gained 1,000 new dedicated organizers.

1,000 people from all walks of life. Teenagers to retirees. From all 50 states. 40% are people of color. Over 70% are women. All took part in a 12-week organizing training and action program, learning how to be organizers and mobilizing to defend the Affordable Care Act, protect young immigrants from deportation, and hold members of Congress accountable.

Dear MoveOn member,

1,000 people from all walks of life. Teenagers to retirees. From all 50 states. 40% are people of color. Over 70% are women. All took part in a 12-week organizing training and action program, learning how to be organizers and mobilizing to defend the Affordable Care Act, protect young immigrants from deportation, and hold members of Congress accountable.

Resistance Summer was awesome.

A refresher: Resistance Summer has been our summer-long training program, with 1,000 MoveOn members in all 50 states learning how to organize and mobilize their communities to stand up and take action for progressive values.

These MoveOn Mobilizers just graduated and are ready to continue to organize for justice in their local communities, through the months and elections ahead.

The goal of Resistance Summer was both to win concrete victories this summer and increase the capacity of the Resistance for the long haul, looking beyond the short term (though resisting Trump in the here and now is paramount) to winning a redistribution of power within our communities in the long term.

Here's some of what we accomplished. We:

  • Helped save health care for tens of millions of Americans by stopping Trumpcare so far (though we know that the fight continues today), with over 490 high-impact neighborhood canvassing events against Trumpcare and for Medicare for All.
  • Trained 1,000 people from every state in the nuts and bolts of organizing, with trainings that covered everything from storytelling, to campaign strategy, to mapping power and privilege in their organizing spaces.
  • Organized over 1,450 events, led or supported by this cohort of 1,000 MoveOn Mobilizers, from Alaska, to Maine, to Arizona, to Florida.
  • Built community, with dozens of organizing cohorts teaming up regionally to meet and plan their actions.
  • Organized, in over 230 congressional districts, events around Congress members' town halls, or speak-outs during the congressional recess where members of Congress weren't hosting their own events. Many Mobilizers quickly organized vigils in the wake of the Charlottesville, Virginia attack, and put pressure on lawmakers to stand up to white supremacy by organizing events and making phone calls.

Now, we're going to keep building their organizing muscles with a new opportunity to take action where they live—this October, MoveOn members like you are organizing events at congressional offices nationwide to demand accountability from their elected officials. And we need your help to pull it off.

Building on this success is a long-term project, and we need your ongoing support to be able to devote some of our resources to building long-term results like these.

Can you chip in $5 a month to help us build more programs like Resistance Summer?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Our organizers held events in almost every corner of the U.S.:

But it's the stories we remember.

There were the organizers in Philadelphia who made their cookout a community Iftar near the end of Ramadan, with over 100 people — Muslim and non-Muslim —coming together in a show of solidarity with the local Muslim community.

And the organizers who canvassed Marco Rubio's neighborhood and found that most of his neighbors support Medicare for All and didn't know why their senator and neighbor didn't support it as well.

And the organizers in North Carolina who couldn't get their senator, Thom Tillis, to agree to an open, in-person town hall, so they held a "Missing: Senator Thom Tillis" event outside of his office instead, demanding that he answer questions on how he’d work to actively confront white supremacy after the events in Charlottesville.

We want to do more of this—much more. But we need your help.

Can you chip in $5 a month to help MoveOn continue to build and sustain programs like Resistance Summer?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Resistance Summer has helped change the world — our organizers are part of why millions of Americans haven’t had their health care cut for now, and why Medicare for All is on the lips of millions — and it’s definitely changed lives. Take it from the Resistance Summer alumni themselves:

"I entered this program feeling hopeless, frustrated, and afraid. I feel like now I am stronger because I realized there are ways we can change the world and keep America great. Solid, concrete actions are available, and I can help make them happen. So while I am still concerned about where our country is headed, I now feel like I have a chance to do something about it." –Judy D., Newark, DE

"This program has given me the courage and confidence to keep going, keep organizing and mobilizing, and keep resisting." –Melissa O., Willow Grove, PA

"Thank you for the training and experiences I've received this summer. I plan to keep moving on with my activism more confidently now that I’ve been through your training.." –Desiree M., Miami, FL

"I am more aware of what is coming out of Washington, how it affects me, and what I can try to do about it. I don't have to just accept it." –Jean C., Kirtland, OH

Or if the stories don’t do it for you, just look at some of these pictures from the summer:

The progressive movement now has a 1,000-member-strong resource that it didn’t have three months ago. We're highlighting the efforts of just a small slice of organizers, but expect to see big things from all of these new organizers in the months and years to come.

But perhaps even more importantly: We’re just getting started on training MoveOn members to organize where they live—and Resistance Summer is an exciting first chapter, not the whole story.

Because, as we said when we introduced Resistance Summer, we know that this work — and organizing in general — is a marathon. And the challenges ahead this year and moving forward—from defending Dreamers, to standing against the Muslim ban, to demanding environmental and climate justice for hurricane survivors, to shutting down a rush toward war in the Korean peninsula—are going to require sustainability.

Let this Resistance Summer be the start of something really and truly new in organizing, beyond a single season of activity.

Please chip in $5 a month to help us think long-term—and dare to begin thinking of Resistance Years, beyond a single Resistance Summer.

Or, if you can't chip in monthly, cick here.

Thanks for all you do.

P.S. Throughout the summer, organizers shared some of their favorite stories of events with us—like the People's Town Hall that made cardboard cutouts of their absentee representatives and senators in the "Where's Waldo?" outfit to "answer" questions from frustrated voters. Or the tiny conservative town where Mobilizers realized that virtually all of their neighbors support Medicare for All.

We've collected a few of those stories, alongside photos and videos from the summer, into a single webpage, at HowWeSpentOurSummerVacation.com. Click here to see some of the best moments from the summer. Here are a few additional snippets to whet your appetite:

"I am MUCH more comfortable being active and therefore, more likely to continue doing so even without the Resistance Summer structure under me. For instance, I quickly organized an event yesterday in response to the administration's decision on DACA; it would never have entered my mind before to do that, and I wouldn't have had a clue how to publicize it."–Melissa F., Long Lake, MN

"I don't know if Resistance Summer changed me, so much as allowed me to access parts of myself that were dormant since the election or that I did not engage with because of my day job, personal life, and feeling of being paralyzed into inaction. It gave me the boost I needed to get back into THE WORK." –Jessica S., Silver Spring, MD

"We need to get offline, come together, and continue listening to each other face-to-face. I enjoyed the face-to-face contact and listening to other Idahoans. It is up to us to continue fighting for our kids—and I will take what I learned this summer and keep going full force." –Megan G., Boise, ID

Red alert (Trumpcare is back)

I'm Ben Wikler, MoveOn's Washington Director. I'm writing you today because I've been on phone calls with lawmakers and Hill staff all weekend, and I have some really bad news: The GOP is a hair's breadth away from passing the most devastating health care repeal bill yet

Dear MoveOn member,

I'm Ben Wikler, MoveOn's Washington Director. I'm writing you today because I've been on phone calls with lawmakers and Hill staff all weekend, and I have some really bad news: The GOP is now a hair's breadth away—closer than they've ever been—to passing a devastating health care repeal bill, shredding the Affordable Care Act and gutting Medicaid.1

This is a five-alarm fire. We need to fight back, now.

Can you chip in $3 to fund an emergency-overdrive campaign to stop this rush to repeal?

I know, it seemed like the ACA fight was over. And the media is behind on this, not yet reporting the severity of the situation we're in.

But behind the scenes, a group of hard-right Republicans—including former senator Rick Santorum—have been gathering GOP support in the Senate for a repeal bill just as destructive than the ones that failed this summer.2 And this time, they might have Senator John McCain's vote, which is enough to pass this Trumpcare bill if no other senators flip (it was just one vote that stopped Trumpcare in July).3,4

Time is short. The Senate parliamentarian has ruled that Republicans have to pass their repeal by September 30 or start the process over from scratch. That's why the GOP is wasting no time—they're rushing toward a vote in less than two weeks.

This is the final showdown in this year's epic fight to stop the Republicans from taking away health care from tens of millions of Americans. To win, we'll need to crank up the volume of public outrage all the way to 11.

We know exactly how to do that—it's how we won the last repeal vote. But it takes substantial resources. Which is why I'm asking:

Will you chip in $3 to help stop Trumpcare?

Yes, I'll chip in.

This is sudden-death overtime. There's no margin for error: If the GOP gets 50 Republicans to support this repeal bill, they'll bring it to the Senate floor, Mike Pence will cast the tie-breaking vote, it'll be rushed through the House, Donald Trump will sign it into law, and millions of Americans will begin losing their health insurance coverage as premiums skyrocket and protections for pre-existing conditions disappear.5,6

That's why we must stop Republicans from getting to 50 votes. With your help, we will:

  • Keep the phones of Republican senators ringing off the hook using every channel at our disposal. We'll drive calls over email and use advanced analytics and phone technology to empower volunteer teams to call and send text messages to millions of folks who are represented by a Republican senator.
  • Protest on Capitol Hill and outside of in-state GOP Senate offices across the country to show senators, their staffers, and the press the intensity of opposition.
  • Run digital video ads blanketing social media sites in targeted states that make vivid the local cost of repeal and tell constituents how to pressure their senators.
  • Make grants to local organizers in key states to aid emergency organizing campaigns to make sure that senators are met by repeal opponents everywhere they turn.

All of this will be done in close concert with allies, as part of a movement-wide mobilization to stop this lethal repeal bill. And while we ramp up this emergency health care defense push, we must still continue our fierce campaigns on other fronts full-force—especially continuing to press for a clean Dream Act.

Can you donate $3 to get the fight against health care repeal over the finish line?

Yes, I'll chip in to support MoveOn's emergency campaign to stop Trumpcare.

Nobody should have to worry about whether they'll be able to afford to see a doctor. Which is why, in the long run, we're fighting for Medicare for All as our ultimate goal. But if the GOP succeeds with ripping up the advances we've already made, things will get far worse instead of better. We can't afford to go backwards.

The GOP has been trying to take away our health care since the moment they were sworn into office. Every time, we've risen to the fight. Now, as the clock ticks down to the September 30 deadline, we're called to join the battle once again. Let's make this a victory so complete that the GOP never attempts this hideousness again.

Thanks for all you do.

Watch: Rev. Barber on how to stop white supremacy

Those Confederate statues were built on something even bigger. Watch my new video with MoveOn as I talk about how to confront white supremacy.

Dear MoveOn member,

Donald Trump is not the first politician to openly stoke racism and hatred.

He is a part of a much larger system of white supremacy that is reinforced in our nation election after election.

In a new video, I share my thoughts on why we need to dig deeper to address structural racism—and how we move forward.  You can click here to watch it and share it with friends.

Rev. Barber sets the record straight on white supremacy.

Don't want to watch on Facebook? Click here to watch on YouTube.

It's important to pull down Confederate symbols—many of which were erected as monuments to white supremacy during the Jim Crow era, decades after the Civil War. And we must also focus on the policy violence of voter suppression, attacks on immigrants, and denial of access to health care and living wages, which continue to oppress communities of color and the poor.

White supremacy is about maintaining power through the politics of division and oppression—and it impacts everyone, Black, brown, or white.

Advancing a moral agenda to confront and take down white supremacy in all its forms is work we all can do together. As I and my colleagues at Repairers of the Breach tour the country with the new #PoorPeoplesCampaign, the diversity of the communities committed to reviving the heart of democracy gives me hope.

Please click here to take a moment to watch and share this video—then take action to tackle the symbols and policies of racism all around us.

Sincerely,

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II
Pres. & Sr. Lecturer, Repairers of the Breach

Tell us about your #ResistanceRecess event

Thousands of people took part! How was your #ResistanceRecess event?

Dear Eddie,

Thank you for attending a #ResistanceRecess event!

During the month-long congressional recess in August, MoveOn members, mobilizers, and allies showed up at congressional town halls and lawmakers' offices across the United States for the third time this year with over 650 events happening between July 28-September 4 from Alaska, to Maine, to Arizona, to Florida.

We were there to:

  • demand that Congress censure Trump for failing to unequivocally denounce white supremacy after the Charlottesville, Virginia,  terror attack,
  • stand up to Republican attacks on immigrant youth by demanding a clean Dream Act,
  • advance Medicare for All, and
  • hold accountable Republicans who voted to take away health care from millions.

And in districts where members of Congress were nowhere to be found, MoveOn members held our own constituent town halls.

Can you take a few moments to tell us about your #ResistanceRecess event?

Your feedback is critical—it helps us learn and maximize our impact as we plan future actions.

We will continue to expand on the pressure we built during #ResistanceRecess by holding our next week of action between October 15-22. Click here to see if there's already an event registered near you and if not, sign up to host an event in October. We'll send you more details as the actions get closer on how to organize the event.

Don't forget to complete the survey about your #ResistanceRecess experience!

Thanks for all you do.

–Gabby, Josh, Emma, Alex, and the rest of the team

P.S. If you have pictures of your event, please send photos to photos@moveon.org and post them on social media. (Be sure to include #ResistanceRecess and tag @MoveOn in your post.) If you took Facebook Live or other video during the event, please share the link to your videos here.

Call Rep. Meeks to defend DACA and insist on a clean Dream Act

Dear MoveOn member,

The last 36 hours have included fast-moving and conflicting news on whether Congress and Donald Trump are approaching a deal to defend DACA and pass a clean Dream Act in the weeks ahead.1

While it's good that Trump is feeling the pressure to fix the crisis that he created, what's crucial is that there is no deal yet—and 800,000 immigrants, and their families and communities remain at risk due to Trump's decision to end DACA.

Until there is real action to pass a clean Dream Act—one that does NOT treat 800,000 young immigrants as a bargaining chip to invest in Trump's toxic agenda, whether it's tax cuts for corporate billionaires, wasteful border walls, or funding Trump's deportation machine to target Dreamers' families at the border and beyond—we must keep the pressure on Congress.

MoveOn members have already made thousands of phone calls and participated in a grassroots delivery of 1.1 million petition signatures to Congress this Tuesday. We know that what we're doing is working, because Congress and Trump are scrambling to sort out a solution. So let's up the pressure!

Can you call Representative Gregory W. Meeks right now to let him know that voters like you demand a clean Dream Act, ASAP, and that you don't want a "deal" that adds more money to Trump's agenda to terrorize immigrant communities?

Here's where to call:

  • Rep. Meeks - (202) 225-3461

You can click here for a script and to let us know how your call went—knowing how many MoveOn members called will help us make the case that this is an urgent priority for Congress.

We can't count on Trump to uphold a deal. And we can't let Democrats treat Dreamers as a bargaining chip. The majority of Americans and the majority of members of Congress want to pass the Dream Act. There is no need for Democrats to settle for anything less than a clean Dream Act.

Until 800,000 young immigrants who have made their lives in America are given full protection of the law, Congress has failed in its duty. Now is the time to act.

Thanks for all you do.

BOOM: Single payer is here!

Democrats are flocking to support Bernie's Medicare for All, single payer health care bill.

Dear MoveOn member,

Two years ago, Bernie Sanders had a bill to create a Medicare for All, single payer health care bill. It was supported by exactly zero other U.S. Senators.

This week, he re-introduced the bill, and one-third of the Democratic caucus is on board—including virtually every senator thought to be planning a run for president in 2020.

And it isn't just liberal Democrats from deep blue states getting on board. Joe Manchin of West Virginia—a state Donald Trump carried by 42 points—says it should be explored as well. Joe Manchin! The Democrat who once shot a bullet through a global warming bill in a campaign ad!

There's never been this much momentum for single payer, and we need to keep it going. Will you chip in $3 to help mobilize the grassroots support we need to make single payer a reality?

Yes, I'll chip in.

When President Obama was elected and started working on health care reform, single payer was dismissed as a pipe dream. That's why today's Bloomberg News headline reads: "Bernie Sanders is changing the Democratic Party."1

But while we've made huge progress, some Democrats remain hesitant. We need to show those senators that there's support for Medicare for All in their states as well and that the American people are ready to finally get the profit out of our health care system.

So here's the plan:

  • Building support from lawmakers. We'll advocate for Democratic senators and representatives—and even Republicans—to co-sponsor Bernie's Medicare for All bill or offer their own bills that guarantee health care as a fundamental right. Already, more than 100,000 MoveOn members have lent their support to Bernie's effort, and thousands made Senate phone lines ring off the hook, thanking progressive champs and encouraging the hold-outs to act.
  • Educating the public about Medicare for All. We'll do this with our in-house Video Lab team that has already produced videos on this issue that have been viewed millions of times, and through our spokespeople on cable television and MoveOn members who can talk to their own communities about this bill.
  • Ensuring that universal health care for all is a top electoral issue. In the 2018 midterms, we will hold Republicans accountable for trying to take away health care from tens of millions of Americans; and in the lead up to 2020, we will push all candidates for Congress and the presidency to offer their own programs for quality coverage for every American.
  • Taking back the House in 2018—and the Senate and the White House in 2020. Simply capitalizing on outrage isn't enough; we must show that we can win with a positive agenda that has health care for all at its core.
  • Beating back attempts to take away our health care. While we're on the offense, we also have to protect what we have. With news that a new version of Trumpcare has just been announced, we need to make sure that Republicans can't push through devastating legislation that takes us backwards.

This is a sea change. Four years ago, the idea of a serious push for single payer was unthinkable. Now it's happening.

Will you chip in $3 to help keep the momentum going?

Yes, I'll chip in to help make single payer Medicare for All a reality in America.

Thanks for all you do.
